Basic Refit Costs

Need a little help estimating some basic refit work in a Florida Marina for a 40 foot sailboat - I would like to understan estimates on actual professional hired work:
Hard sand bottom (remove 2 layers of paint) and repaint
Ground and fill scratches and chips in gelcoat with matching gelcoat
Compound and wax gelcoat
Remove and replace rusted Keel bolt nuts
Rename (if vinyl can remove with heat gun)
Any help / estimates / advice are welcome

Isn't the appropriate answer "how much have you got?" for such an open ended question as this?

To be a little more helpful, a bottom job (paint and sanding) will probably set you back at least $3000.

Rename/rehailing port can be fairly cheap, unless you want some fancy schmancy graphics. I took care of it for less than $100 and it's trivial to do yourself.

The rest that you ask is very labor intensive, and thus will be very pricey to have done professionally. I can't estimate what that would cost.

The key is to get firm written estimates with a firm time-line and then stand there and watch them do the job. Open ended work orders have a tendancy to sky rocket (especially in Miami) and the only time someone finished a job early was when my wife had added a penalty clause for time overruns.

The keel bolts could very easily become open ended.

No idea on costs in your part of the world, but time wise I would say:-

Hard Sand Bottom (ashore, with power and good working room) - 2 blokes for 1 day (7 hours). repaint would be 1 fella, I suggest a couple of hours, call it 3 per coat. lets say a primer and 2 coats.......I make that around 20 hours.

Ground and fill gelcoat - depends how many to do say half a dozen dings / gouges - wouldn't expect more than 2 or 3 hours, unless you've been machine gunned..........call it 3 hours.

Compound & Wax - that'll be a good clean as well. hull only (with power!) I would say 1 fella could do in a day. likely to be knackered at the end of Topsides? add another day.........14 hours.

remove and replace keel bolts - depends how easily (if!) they come out. top tip - make sure not hammering 'em out when it's resting on the railway sleeper under the boat Ooops. just re-read only rusty nuts depends on access. and whether anything left to put a new nut onto . Presuming don't have to dissassemble boat then could be an hour each. could be 10 mins each. could also be a real head scratcher - if you end up with SFA to bolt onto...........hard to say, on a single row of bolts would expect around 12 - but could be a double row............a couple are guaranteed to be a complete pig I'd budget a day, and hope for a couple of hours......lets call it 5 hours

rename / remove vinyl - should come off with a heat gun. under an hour (don't want to melt / scorch anything).........1 hour.

I make that 43 hours - excluding materials, travelling and thinking time .

What do other folks reckon on my guestimates? Anyone wanna quote? (over here via boatyard - sufficient skill and insured - would be around £1500 or approx USD2,300.

Can't criticize your estimate and like the idea of doing in hours, not dollars but I haven't seen anyone mention materials cost. Nothing outrageous for the smaller jobs, but this would be measurable for the bottom painting...
