Bareboat charter (rental boat) Insurance

Greetings,

I am looking to rent a 30’ sailboat for a week, but the owner/Marina does not have insurance on the vessel (government owned) and I am required to provide proof of insurance to the Harbor I wish to stay at for a week in San Diego. The rental manager indicated most people are covered by their home owners policy but that is not the case with my State Farm policy, and every insurance company I’ve called won’t insurance a rental boat. It seems everyone requires the owner themselves purchase the policy and extend coverage to the person renting, but that won’t work in my case since the government owned the vessel I’m renting.

Does anyone know where I can get a liability policy on someone else’s boat to satisfy the marina I’m docking at?

Thats an unsual arrangement.

More commonly, as the ins co told you, the boat owner carries the insurance. Ive been around the charter industry a long time and never encountered this or short term boat rental insurance. Probably easier just to find a private sector rental.

Maybe check into a personal umbrella liability policy and see if it meets their requirments. They are inexpensive and good coverage to have anyway...esp in the USA.
