Ball-Park-Figure to Ship a Yacht from San Diego to Sydney, Australia

Hi, Just wondering if anyone might be able to give me a ballpark figure to transport a 45 foot aluminium yacht from San Diego, California to Sydney, Australia or South Australia or some other cheaper port in Australia?

Your best bet is to go through a shipper.There are bound to be vessels leaving San Francisco via San Diego - their first port of call in Australia maybe Cairns or Brisbane. I have done it a few times from Australia to other destinations. They can handle the insurance and other paper work - they can also arrange the customs clearing into Aussie.

The other component of the transportation is the necessity to have a cradle made for the '45 foot aluminium yacht' The ships have a flat area just ahead of the Bridge housing on container ships. This is where the cradle is lashed to the steel deck - it is also very desirable to cover the yacht and cradle with plastic sheeting as smoke from the stack will cover the boat with acidic soot. Also the boat must be EMPTY of fuel and gas when shipped.

Between 6 & 8K US$ + expenses if the vessel is sea worthy if I delivered it. Why not sail it yourself?

Forgot to add that the Mast/s and boom will have been removed and packed alongside or on the cradle, in old carpeting etc.

If you decide on a professional delivery - make sure that the skipper is approved by the insurance.

There are several yacht transport companies where you just power on and they build the supports under the yacht right there. No need to un-step the mast at all.

Call Dockwise or Yacht Path and get a quote and delivery schedule. Dockwise is probably the most well known.

If a professional delivery skipper is contracted, then the quotation will usually be based on nautical miles between 2 points, in this case San Diego CA and Sydney NSW :- 6530nm.
US Dollars in the range $2.50 <> $3.75 /nm. Therefore $16,300 at the lower end and $24,500 at the upper end (average $20,400) PLUS airfare, accommodation and other expenses such as fuel, marinas etc.

I thought a 40 footer from west coast USA would be in the vacinity of USD$40,000 inl cradle & all up fees. Remember you add GST of 10% to that freight charge upon unloading in Aus plus 15% gst and duty for the boat.

The most basic problem is a 40 foot boat wont fit in a 40 foot container; you cany stack another container on top of the boat.

I met him in Tonga and he is trustworthy and gives his time freely to local comunities to help their fishermen. He also helps other cruisiers and is a good bloke to have in any anchorage
He has a good boat, and I am sure your boat would be in safe hands.
