Australian RACQ Insurance Changes

RACQ insurance has changed significantly since I was last insured with them Oct 2011. When I sold my boat at the end of last year, I had been insured by RACQ. It was a 28 footer listed as moored in the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton. No problems.

Today I contacted RACQ as I have been looking around at boats and wondered about insurance. Much to my astonishment, I was told that I could not insure with them any boat I bought. Reason? I would have the boat on a swing mooring on the river.

I could get insurance only if the boat was in a "mooring facility which is: (a) permanently fenced off to the general public and has 24 hour 7 days a week security surveillance; or (b) is moored to a private jetty at your residential property."

I am shocked about the insurance change but I guess that is the industry. I'll have to look elsewhere.

I guess there may be other folk insured with RACQ who may find themselves without insurance since not everyone can comply with what RACQ want.

cheers

really, how strange is that considering they are (were?) a Queensland based company. I just read this on their on-line PDS:Geographic limit
Boats are covered anywhere on the land and waterways of Australia but only up to 200 nautical
miles from the Australian mainland and Tasmania.
.
Are we talking about this GIO Caravan Insurance | Caravan Insurance Australia | Motorhome Insurance | GIO

FWIW, when I was arranging the cover through GIO, I had to send a copy of the survey to a Suncorp email address. The on-line PDS from both companies were very similar, maybe call Suncorp as well!

Re: Australian RACQ Insurance Changes

Hi Wotname, yup, that's the one I contacted. I re-read some of their blurb and there is mention of Qld so one would think no problem.

But when I go to the Branch Locator it does not list any Qld Branches.

Also, when I enter a Qld postcode into the Branch Locator search box, it initially brought up a list but when I click on any in the list it just says:

"No results in your state, please call . . ."

Not having a branch in Qld should not stop them selling me insurance but ????

I think there is some link of GIO to Suncorp since until 1986 we in Qld had a SGIO which was renamed to Suncorp. Maybe GIO stuff in Qld is done by Suncorp.

Ahh, the mysteries of big institutions.
