Australia third party only (liability) Insurance without Survey?

Hi I have searched and been phoning around for the last few weeks emailing and filling out online forms (bangs head)
I have a few quotes back for third party only. (Some places I called like Hold fast in Darwin on advice from a 2011 thread was a dead end as they no longer do third party only)
So far the two places that have said yes both want an out of water survey. I'm not due to haul out yet and I would like to avoid the hassle and expense of another survey haul out just so we can insure our boat to allow us to be in a marina.
I don't really care about any frills etc as I'm happy to self insure and would not get any if it was not required.

Does anyone know where we can get no hassle third party only insurance without the need for a survey at a fair price? BTW the boat was made in 1986. And I'm happy to have an overseas policy if it will work and is not a drama trying to make payment.

Any help is much appreciated.

Nautilus has offered but requires Survey. That's who we're looking to at the moment yet to hear from the other dozen or so places we've inquired to.

It may not help much, but the local (Hobart, Tas) Nautilus rep (Hughie Lewis, Lewis Marine) will generally do an in-water survey (usually not even charge for the survey) and assuming he doesn't find anything bad, will issue insurance.

Interesting. When I looked into it nautilus where out because they wouldn't insure older boats on a mooring… the aussie yacht insurance thing is ridiculous. I guess they have had so many claims recently with the growth in sailing and the lack of a diy fix it mentality that I cant really blame them. Just recently in our bay at least three resprays costing 4000 dollars to fix minor scratches that could have been touched up. I can't blame the owners, after all we are all paying so much for the insurance that we might as well get something back… but it compounds the problem.

Re: Australia third party only (liability) insurance without Survey?

My info (for what it is worth) is that Nautilus' underwriters changed a year or so ago, and they insisted on no longer offering insurance on older boats on swing moorings...

In fact, I suspect that there are a lot of neglected old boats on un-maintained swing mooring, and those who do maintain their boats and moorings are paying the price. Furthermore, our insurance premiums (with Nautilus) have more than doubled in 5 years, so we are seriously reconsidering our options.

Is Club Marine an option?

One other suggestion for you is that Pantanaeus (or however you spell it) have fairly recently opened their first office in Australia. I don't know anything about them, but they have a pretty good reputation for insuring international cruisers....

The lazy tax! Give the bas@ards heaps, shop around and drive a hard bargin. We need to talk to each other to find the best deals otherwise they will walk all over us. I'm presently being ripped off by RACT to the tune of 900 per year for 25000 comprehensive.

Another warning, the Bars@ards won't pay out if you are not insured without an expesive legal case. I know of two cases where the fault was clearly 100% with the insured damaging an uninsured. In both cases the insured party reneged on their responsibility...

Edward William Marine insurance will fit your bill and will be fine provided you never make a claim. See here for a discussion, albeit a little dated:

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...use-26450.html

I have a 1983 boat in good nick sitting on a swing mooring at Shute Harbour and am comprehensively insured with Pantaenius (which required a lift out survey). Considering that at the moment there are two boats within a bull's roar of mine sunk at their moorings I can fully understand the reluctance of insurers to even insure third party without a lift out survey.

We just insured with Pantaenius yacht insurance.

18 month ago Patanius Sydney insured my 34 y.o. Mono without a survey, totally hassle free. My boat was on the GC.
Good luck.

Can someone explain to me why and Insurance Company would need a survey for 3rd party liability??? What has it got to do with your boat? It only covers damage you might do to others.

Because they have to pay for the clean up if it sinks.

Re: Australia third party only (liability) Insurance without Survey?

I have third party only in Oz with Trident marine. But I don't know if they need a survey or not, I happened to have one when I was shopping for insurance, so they did get to see it, just don't know if they needed it.

And along the same lines, I guess a really badly maintained boat is more likely to run into someone else due to steering failure etc.
