Re: Any suggestions for shipping from Miami to Ponce, Puerto Rico

Living at the end of the world on another outpost of the US have found USPS great if item fits their limits. FedEx and UPS are total ripoffs as they don't ship surface, charge way more than the PO for 2nd day air and it usually turns out to be 4th or 5th day air while USPS priorty mail actually does get stuff here in 2-3 days.

For shipping large/heavy items have used local trucking company to arrange the whole thing. They tell me who to have the goods dropped off at on the mainland and it arrives here in a few weeks at usually surprizingly low cost.

There is a US law called the Jones Act that says any goods shipped between US States or possessions must go in a US bottom. Greatly increases the cost of shipping I think because it largely creates a monopoly for the shippers. Don't know if that is the issue with Tropical but shipping costs to me, even with the Jones Act, hasn't been as outrageous as UPS/FedEx. Might take a trip into San Juan but should be able to find a shipping company that will get your goods to you.

Yes, what you see above IS the on-line quote for five 60 lb packages shipped Priority Mail from Miami to Ponce, PI. Could be a bit more than that depending on the packaging.

Hey, thanks everybody, this is great information. Here is what I think we’re going to do: We have found a local rigger who has much higher prices, but when you figure the shipping in, it doesn’t look so bad. And here is what I’ve been thinking - the folks here have been hurt, and need our support. Seems like they’ve not received as much assistance as they could have. Call it paying forward / backward / sideways. Heaven knows, I’ve had lots of shoves to help me.

You might try TOTE, Trailer Bridge or Crowley. They all ship to PR. Years ago I worked for the predecessor to TOTE and we made container deliveries to Ponce on a weekly basis.

Best of luck.
