All I need now is that government grant to do an intensive and exhaustive study.

Math wasn't your strong suit, right? Or was it comprehension?

The original poster might wish to read an article by Paul Shard that I have on my cruising website:

Cost of Cruising Today 2006

The Shards have been cruising since 1989, earning their living through TV and DVD productions about their travels. This article also formed the basis of a recent article in Canadian Yachting magazine.

Shard's site

Paul and Sheryl's primary site is at Sailing Adventures (which I manage for them) but they also maintain blog and podcast sites.

These are linked from a dropdown menu on the above page.

The blog is particularly interesting as it goes through their deliberations in deciding on which boat to buy after they sold "Two Step".

The podcasts feature interviews with other blue water sailors.

Of course as stated before, depending on where you cruise depend's on cost.

As a rough example, rough cost's in Penang/Langkawi area for us in a 50 ft powercat and living for 2 based on a recent 3 week stay there.

Diesel @ .70c/l x 600/mth = $420

Unleaded 4 Dinghy & Genny @.70c/l x 100/mth = $70

Engine maintenance [ filters and oil ] = $40

Bottom clean and antifoul through Thai Yard = $35

Eating out for every meal, every day for 2
including 12 cans of Tiger beer a day = $500

Incidental groceries and mixers for spirit's = $100

Weekly half hour massage at $5 each = $10

Laundry, washed and folded = $20

Taxi's and transport = $80

Incidental money wasting on DVD's etc = $50

TOTAL = 1325/mth

Extra niceties

Car hire and fuel for 2 day's per mth = $50

Marina berth for 4 day's per mth = $ 50

*** hotel accom for 4 days per mth = $ 130

A really flash banquet at the best Hotel in Penang
inc bottomless beer and wine = $ 60

An extra $290

So living well, should cost around $330 AUD/week [ $285 USD/week ]

going up a peg with the extra niceties every month
will cost about $403 Aud/week [ $347 USD/week]

Also note that this is without us catching and cooking, and infact not really getting our hand's dirty at all, so we actually can do it a lot cheaper than that I would think.

Just an example, and am open for suggestion's on anything I missed.

I see one glaring error in your plan.

Seriously, I can see you are hooked on Malaysia - that's a good thing in my book. I am looking forward to spending some time cruising SEA.

We are well on our way to planning our Tioman trip. Looks like mid-September for 3 weeks. Can't wait.

Geez mate, a daily massage would kill me, Took us 3 day's to recover from the first one.

Tioman Island, I envy you there, we heard many good reports of the quality of the beaches, and it's where they filmed "South Pacific".

I would be interested to see how much my rough list would cost us in Singapore.

Have fun

In regards to cars eating up your money. I got a job in downtown San Diego (I used to work in one of the outskirt cities), and leave my car in the marina parking lot for a week or two at a time. We use it to get groceries, and stuff from home depot, etc.

I bought a $500 bicycle that's been working like a champ, and I've lost 5lbs in a couple of months.

Another way to extend that old car's life a bit is to use it less, and getting a different job closer to where you live isn't that bad of an idea. Really cuts down on the costs and headaches.

I've been cycling to and from work 2 or 3 times per week too. It is only about 8 miles each way, but it is good for the waistline and the bottom line!

Riding a bicycle 2-3 times a week for 16 miles a clip is a great way to avoid a heart attack, as a current thread is discussing!
