Advice on used sailboat purchase price

Hi I'm new to the forum and I'm starting to look for a sailboat in the 34ft range going to be a liveaboard and have 25k cash. What price range should I look up to in regards to the asking price in general. Not familiar with the used 1980's-1990's sailboat market in florida.-

Re: Advice on used sailboat purchase price

You can find a boat in need of major rehab for under $1000... and might have a really nice boat by the time you have spent that $25k.
It'll still be a low resale value boat. Better than the $1000 but nowhere near the $25k.
It would still be a lot lower cost than a new boat the same size...

A used boat is a hole in the water that demands to be filled with money.... and it leaks. (leaks the money out and might leak water in, which demands MORE money to fix.)

You are talking 25 to 35 year old boats. Unless they have been well cared for CONSTANTLY, that is approaching end of life even for warships. Even with constant care, parts will be wearing out.

Take a look at Buc.net for pricing data. You can create a limited guest account to look up basic pricing data.

Search the net, yacht world, boat trader, for similar listings to get a feel for asking prices.

Re: Advice on used sailboat purchase price

I suggest you just start looking. Look up to $25k and low ball ($12k). A lot of folks in that price range just want out from under marina fees and insurance.

You may be able to find a boat on the hard, imo a better option as you can check/paint the bottom, thru hulls, zincs, repack the stuffing box and paint her first thing. If she is wet inside you know rebedding is required.

Once you find a boat then ask for specifics to the make.

Re: Advice on used sailboat purchase price

There is no straightforward answer about the purchase of a 20+ yr old boat.

Too many variables are possible.

The most predictable is what I posted above. Buy a junk boat cheap, rehab and have something worth maybe half the investment but in decent shape and safe to operate.

Agree that there are too many variables. Do some leg work on your own. Start a spreadsheet and populate it with boats you have searched up on Yachtworld and other sites. It took me several years to purchase my boat after spending quite some time on the internet and educating myself and knowing what I was comfortable with.

Re: Advice on used sailboat purchase price

If I wanted to spend up to $25k on a boat then I would begin by looking into boats $25-40k anticipating offering lower than asking price. Goal to find a boat already gone through a refit. If $25k is your true all in budget including misc upgrades then reduce the price range accordingly. Cheers.

Too many variables.

Start looking. Craigslist, marina liens and speak to yacht club members.

When you find a well maintained vessel for a good price that surveys well buy it.

Then budget the greater of at least 10% of the purchase price or $3+k / annum just to maintain the vessel in a sea worthy condition.
