Advice on registration flag

Hi everyone,

Probably this is a topic discussed frequently but I will add some ingredients that will make it spicy, I promise.

- We are a family from Chile (tax paying residence) buying a used Bavaria 44-49 in Croatia (ex-VAT).
- Insurance companies would not insure us with our current Chilean residence.
- I have a German passport.
- I cannot register the boat in Chile unless I take the boat to visual inspection (third world country, that's why) and pay VAT.

What we have figure out for now, is that the best way might be to establish an LLC either in Delaware, and register the boat there, or in the BVI and register the boat in Jersey.

That way we could use the LLC's address to insure the boat, and register her in a non-EU country.

Are there other options that you think we should explore?

Thank you!!!
Cris

Re: Advice on registration flag

Hello Cris,

about registering in Germany:

To my knowledge you can register a boat in Germany in your name if you are a German Citizen (more precisely if more than 50% is owned by a German). VAT doesn't play a role in registration (but probably if you move the boat into EU waters)?
It shouldn't be a problem to get an insurance in Germany for a German flagged boat.
So I guess it comes down to VAT and where you want to cruise?

Hi Patrick! Thank you!

I probably should have mentioned that our plans are to sail the Med for a year before crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean. So VAT actually plays a role in the selection of the registry.

Has anyone experienced buying the boat through a LLC in Europe for private usage purposes?

Thanks!
Cris
