2012 Cost of Living Indicator for Liveaboards

Ok to get tabs on the actual cost to buy basic supplies in various places around the world please indicate where you are and the best price to purchase the following items.
You will note i've taken advice on some items from the previous thread.

4 Litres Diesel fuel. (1.056 US gallons)
4 Litres petrol.
4 Litres milk.
1 Kg fish/seafood, basic. (2.2lb)
700gram Loaf bread (1.5lb)
1 Medium uncooked dressed chicken.
12 Eggs.

Price in local currency and if you have time the equivelant US value, dont forget to add where you are....

G'day, Mate, Happy New Year Here's the data from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand:

1. $6.50 NZD
2. $8.40 NZD
3. $7.20 NZD
4. $18.00 NZD (varies a bit, this is the lower end)
5. $2.30 NZD
6. $11.00 NZD
7. $3.00 NZD

Total = $56.40 NZD. Current USD (@.77) = $43.42 today. I so wish the Gnomes of Zurich would make their minds up on the exchange rate :-)!! Happy New Year. Cheers

Love the Bay of Islands magic country!!!!! Exchange rate right now is based on Journo's rumour mongering and traders manipulation. Frustrating with a capital Frust!!!!!!

Other than the fish and the chook, all the above foodstuffs are Woolies Homebrand...

Visiting Colombia. These prices from Carrefour which I am told is about 10% higher than a local grocery. Beef, pork and potatoes are the staples here and I am told fish will be a bit cheaper on the coast (cartagena)

Prices are Colombian pesos and usd.

4ltr diesel = cop 8454 = $4.38
4ltr gasoline = cop 9088 = $4.71
4ltr milk = cop 7680 = $3.98
1kg red snapper = cop 9100 = $4.72
Loaf bread = cop 2250 = $1.17
1 whole chicken = cop 18,000 = $9.34
Dozen eggs = cop 4750 = $2.46

Total = cop 59322 = $30.77

Bonus items
1kg chicken breast = cop 12,000 = $6.22
1kg ground beef = cop 4600 = $2.39
1kg potatoes = cop 4880 = $2.53
Big mac meal = cop 12,500 = $6.48

You do realise that homebrand milk , eggs and bread are made the same way as most of the expensive brands?

Please tell me you are not paying more for pretty packaging and a label in the false belief that they are in some way better than others

Are you now going to tell us that the more expensive name brand providers use "special" cows and chickens to give milk and eggs?

And in what way are these cows and chickens "special" ?

You would do well to do some research

In short — especially when it comes to milk, eggs, bread and cheese — not that much. Many generics are made in the same factory as branded products by the same companies. Sometimes they are even the same recipe.

One industry source told Crikey he “didn’t think for a minute” there was any difference between the premium and generic milk: ”How do you change the recipe? Add water? That would affect the fat content. They’re the same.”

National Foods, the suppliers of Pura Milk and Woolworths Home Brand generic milk, seems to agree. Last year, former executive Conor O’Malley told the Senate Economics Committee that Pura Milk and Woolworths generic milk are “broadly the same”. And Challenge Dairy executive chairman Larry Brennan said: ”The national health standard … sets the standard and you cannot adulterate white, liquid, fresh milk.”

Yet the price differential is significant. According to figures tabled by the Committee, home brand milk retails for around 60% of the cost of branded milk, despite it being almost an identical product. Home brand cheese averages out at 70% of the price of its branded equivalent, while bread can sometimes retail at 28% of the price of its “premium” brand rival.

We bake our own bread, use longlife or condensed milk and wouldn't eat Basa when local fish are plentiful. Always done it that way?
