Question of the Month with Ted Brewer

I recently started a new series on my blog titled "Question of the Month with Designer Ted Brewer". As the name implies, Ted has agreed to answer a design/sailboat related question or two on just about a monthly basis. This month I asked him to tell me about a few of his favorite personal designs. You can read all about his third favorite all-time design is Mystic, here. We'll be following up sometime next week with his second all-time favorite design.

I've now posted Ted's second response about his second all-time favorite personal design. This time he writes about Black Velvet II, a 43 footer that later lead to the Whitby 42 and Cape North 43 and eventually several other center cockpit cruisers. Another interesting story. And for sure, Black Velvet is a beaut boat... but to the layman, it is hard to see much connection between her and the Whidby 42. The latter, while well respected in the cruising fleet for commodious volumes below decks, are also noted to be pretty poor performers, especially upwind.

Since our Insatiable II shares Black Velvet's construction (strip planked w/frp inside and out) we are happy to hear that she is still sailing. I-2 is only 21 years old with around 100k sea miles, so it sounds like we might get a few more years and miles out of her!.

I just posted the latest in my "Question of the Month with Ted Brewer" series. In this post, Ted shares 50 Years of Cruising Sailboat Evolution and gives his perspective on the inspiration and history of cruising boat designs leading up to what we see on the market today. Enjoy!

Thanks for this. A good friend owns one of the four Huromic/Goderich 40s made (his is cutter-ketch rigged) and they are brilliant boats. I think Bob Wallstrom, Ted's partner in the late '70s, handled that one.

The Goderich 35 is also an excellent, ground-breaking design. I considered buying one but it's a little small for my plans.
