Revised Small Vessel Regulations:

Transport Canada (TC) is in the process of revising the Small Vessel Regulations (SVR) and preparing for another revision of the Small Vessel Construction Standards - TP1332.

The SVR update has been ongoing for some months and there have been consultation activities at various locations across Canada.

The TP1332 revision work is a massive undertaking as TC is trying to blend the 2004 version of TP1332 and several other regulations into a single document. Industry first received word from TC that this task was underway at the Canadian Marine Advisory Council (CMAC) meeting in November 2004. Originally TC requested industry feedback by January 15, 2005. TC was advised the date requested was not just too soon, but a practical impossibility. Since then, TC has re-evaluated the task and concluded that before realistic comments could be offered, a full discussion paper needs to be prepared and circulated.

With an outside consultant now on retainer, TC is making excellent progress on a discussion paper, with the first draft anticipated in mid to late June.

To facilitate industry and the boating community input, the CMMA Board of Directors has decided to hold a National Technical Workshop on October 4-6, 2005. The purpose of this Workshop will be to bring together the recreational boating community to discuss both the SVR changes and the planned TP1332 revisions.
