Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
Thanks Conachair.
Amazon are also currently selling end of year bargain Kindle books (mostly $1.99, but lots of good books are cropping up rather than just trashy romances). The US link is:
Amazon Digital Deals
Amazon UK have a similar thing (click on deals on the top right, then go to digital).
There are about Kindle books available each day, some only there for 24 hours.

I haven't worked out how to do this .
I have found you need to be a resident to get a library card. I have access to about 5 libraries in Australia, but none of them have e-books on loan.
Is there any way of borrowing e-books at a library in the US or UK without being a resident?

It all depends on the library. Ours in SC does not have eBooks. The library in our old town does have eBooks but you must be a county resident to obtain a library card and access. All depends on the library. Also many libraries in Ga are linked so that you can access a range of libraries with one card. Still need to prove residency at your local one though. If anyone knows of a city with eBooks to loan and no residency requirements, let me know. We would love to join that one!

Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
Once you cruise and get out here, you will get more e-book than you can read. We have 7000 as of today and didn't even look for them.

I have checked it out, but you need to be a resident of Solano or Napa counties to apply. Maybe the cruisers you met used a friend's address.
It hasn't been an issue at the moment as I have downloaded a few hundred free classics I have never read and I am picking up discount Kindle books from Amazon at less than couple of $, but it would be lovely to have access to a library at some stage.

Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
This is kinda hard to beat.
Project Gutenberg - free ebooks
I think there are one or two more similar. Isn't Google doing something along these lines?
OK, here. Some free, some not.

eReaderIQ.com
Too bad, like so many other offerings, it is not available to Canadians!

Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
The problem is not the number of free books available, it's the books I want to read. I got a disc with thousands of books from another cruiser but they are not recent releases. Most of the good ones (in my opinion) I have read in the past and there are tons in which I have no interest.
I am willing to pop for a couple of bucks to get a book I want.
The author deserves to get something for his/her talent and effort.
I do think it is terrible to charge $14 for an e-book when they have virtually no production or distribution cost.

I agree, although I haven't paid any more than $12 for a first release and that seems like a bargain to me compared to the price of hard copies!
I am an avid reader with very eclectic tastes and I am rapidly developing a great collection (Gutenberg classics and Amazon US). A couple of weeks ago I finally let go of the security blanket of my hard copies and emptied a locker of books. Feels great having even less possessions .

Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
For Toronto folks the public library has an amazing collection of e-books. (audio and print). Went into a library for the first time since I was a kid and got a library card. Don't have to set foot in there till next year to renew the card.

Re: Free ( & almost) kindle books
One watch you be surprise, that you don't really care what you read. What ever you grab at the book exchange or you got on the drive.
once cruising you don't care about the latest, just get out.
