All this talk of peeing in a bucket is a euphanism for enduring hardship or forsaking traditional land based home comforts in the hope of finding a better/alternative way of life.

Humans are good at adapting to change, and change is the one thing we can be guaranteed in this life. Im sure given the choice between the bucket or a fridge, I would chose the fridge. What is more important to me is a daily shower and 8 hours sleep in comfort.
We all have our list of 'must haves' and 'can do withouts'.
Ive always been a fan of the Robinson Crusoe situation, like Swiss Family Robinson or Mid West pioneer, where a new start, away from the civilised world engages brain and ability coupled with the opportunity to start over and live a better life.

Some see it as a battle with nature and others see it as wanting to live in harmony with nature.

i cruise on my boat for months at the time .without a fridge , nor a toilet..bucket anytime ...
and i wish i could sleep 8 hours !!
i never manage to sleep more than 5 or 6 hours at any given time..

If you think an author should be encouraged to continue his/her efforts, please
buy new, not used. They can't make a living otherwise.

'An Island To Myself' by Tom Neale is available on Amazon.com at approximately $20 new and a bit more secondhand. They will despatch to Australia, don't know how much for though.
Happy Christmas

island to one self with a bucket

cathyoz,

Sorry I have been out of touch. We just spent 7 months in the San Blas. Best place to find a copy is in used bookstores. I don't have a copy, but if someone does maybe they can tell you the publisher.

I have written another book! Yes, I know you were waiting with anxiety, called how to survive on a deserted tropical island. Unfortunately, it is only for sale off the boat right now, (my boat is a floating publishing house) (I might throw out the head to make room, wait, maybe not. The bucket is useful for fish and engine parts, and what not.) It will be on sale as a download in a few months.

For talking only, no sales, http://sailing.books@yahoo.com

Anyway, deserted islands are the best for the adventurous type of girl. Do it!

bad link to a talkative sailor

Sorry about the link, while we were in the San Blas Google switched over to the long promised 'Sites'. However the switch over was not seamless. It will take a while to get it up and running what with all my running around to grocery and hardware stores and those evil bars inbetween. But, never fear, I'll get it running.

In the meantime just write to sailing.books@yahoo.com

Gord, don't know if this belongs here, delete if you like.

Anyway we somehow find ourselves in Golfito in the Pacific side of Costa Rica, where we are slowly heading north to Mexico where the crystal ball that resides inside Karen's head seems to be dictating that we head west to Hawaii and Japan. Or is it a crystal ball in me? I'm sure it is crystal, at least I think they are, maybe steel?
Having lots of fun, catching enormous amounts of fish, local fishermen can't afford the diesel, drinking too much cheap Panamanian beer and getting fat. Or at least i am, Karen burns it off running around here like a mini tornado cleaning here and there and everywhere. It makes me dizzy it really does, as if that wasn't enough, she went off to Africa to be a missionary to a village where they send all the witch doctors after they kill someone. She says she really liked it there, however I seem to be having all these pains all of a sudden just at the same time as she is playing with her pins and needles, jabbing them into something. Maybe I better try to be neater?
But that is Karen's story, I'll let her tell it another time. Wouldn't want to ruin your Xmas and New Year's buzz!
So lift a glass of bubbly for us and we'll do the same for you, ships passing in the night (What, they didn't have radar?)
