Which penetrating fluid for which job ?

I have purchased a few “recommended” cans and seldom been ecstatic - thought I would ask my fellow “I can fix that” experts what they recommend and for what type of seized job ?
I was recommended to use Acetone for a seized winch after all other methods failed - didn’t work either ???
We all know about WD40 , so , what else works ?
...

Kearney rust cutter is the best stuff I've ever used on steel nuts & bolts, cast iron and other metals. It also works great on rusted-to-the-cylinder rings. It's made and sold for power transmission tower work. People 200' in the air don't have time for the usual ground options.

I hate PB Blaster for this. It blows all over the place wasting most of it, by design I would imagine. Any aerosol will.
Get some Liquid Wrench in a little drip type oil can with needle nose spout. It is so thin it penetrates easily and can be put right where you need it. Very little waste.

I seem to remember a recommendation to use acetone mixed with ATF. I think the problem with straight acetone is that it would quickly evaporate before doing much penetrating. PB Plaster is pretty good.

Use a penetrating fluid that first “ freezes “ the fastener to shrink it , then allows the fluid to penetrate

What Jim has been using was something he found out about here on CF, and is colloquially referred to as Weasel's Piss. You mix it yourself, and we keep ours in a small jar with a tight sealing lid. Equal parts acetone and ATF (automatic transmission fluid). It really is very good. You can get stuff apart without breaking anything.

Oil of wintergreen. Some commercial products use this in their formula too.

Another vote for a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF.

Kroil hands down. My grand pappy showed me it years ago and I swear by it. Sometimes I use a combination of this and a torch. Never failed to do the job

Seized wenches usually loosen up with copious amounts of alcohol.

All kidding aside, if a winch is seized internally isn't a rebuild or replacement in order? Otherwise I'd try PB Blaster, ATF fluid/acetone, or a Corrosion X soak overnight. Maybe heat too, but beware petrol ignition.

AeroKroil. Definitely AeroKroil for anything that sticks.

And a good hammer. Nothing else says you're serious like a hammer carried like you mean it.

Oh, and maybe a crow bar, too. Sometimes these things can use a bit more persuasion....

Re: Which penetrating fluid for which job ?

Do you need another supporter for the ATF/acetone combination? Me.
Reasons are: cheap, and works very well. Practical Sailor did a review a few years ago. If I recollect it correctly, they thought it performed better than anything else. Yes, the acetone part evaporates quickly.

When buying off the shelf, I would say Inox (mx3) gets my vote by a long shot.

The only good thing for WD40 and the like is that they come in cans will a long skinny spout, for precise and targeted application.
If only I could have Inox or ATF/acetone in such applicator......

Re: Which penetrating fluid for which job ?

Another vote for Kroil. I prefer the 8 oz can that has a small spout under the cap that lets you place drops right on the fastener thread. Takes very little -- so one can could last a decade. Spray cans just make a mess for this application.
