sailing gloves

Just wondering if you've found any gloves that work well for sailing. My hands tend to get beat up from line handling. These are not for cold weather.

If you have, please leave any info (seller, brand, material, etc.) so I might be able to find them. Thank you.

It's like shoes. There are many brands and whether you like them is personal. Harken, Gill, and Ronstan are a few of the makers.

I got the open fingers West Marine branded ones many years ago and they are still working fine.

As Thinwater says, it's a matter of personal choice, between the major manufacturers. I would advise that you get "full finger" though (thumb and forefinger still open). With open finger gloves I always seem to end up with them curled up and burns om my finger joints (the photo isn't me, but I know the feeling well)

'true sailor' an off brand available from ebay, $10

ive had all the major "sailing" brands in the past, but these gloves last the longest and have excellent grip. and my gloves get a lot of use..

I've only mildly rope burned my hands jumping halyards while racing. Although if the gloves are purely for line handling I definitely agree with this... I really only ever need feeling and good dexterity with those two digits.

Someone had drilled into me when I was younger to never pull on a line unless it was wrapped around a winch drum or had a bight on a cleat. I'm sure that saves me a few rope burns.

Gill Championship (new version this year) are my new favorites. Very tactile.

It depends on the kind of line handling you do. For trimming or pit you need to be able to let the line run through your hands, especially for main trimming or dropping halyards fast under control. Durable gloves with leather palms and good finger coverage are best for this.

But for helming and especially for foredeck work you need max grip, and for this the best thing around is the $5 rubberized gardening gloves you can get at hardware stores. My preferred brand is Atlas. With these you can hold a slippery wet steel wheel, haul on a skinny little spinnaker sheet, bring down a spinnaker in handfuls like a gecko and even climb up 1/4" stainless rod rigging. Cut off the very tip of the thumb and forefinger.

I don’t use sailing gloves. My friend the rugby player does. Depends on your personal experiences.
Yes I have calluses. And my hands get beat up. But for me that’s ok. For my rugby playing buddy his hands can’t take it. But man o man he can take a full body beating I never could.

(I cheat and use a glove when splicing)

What I’m saying is gloves are very personal. None. Full. Insulated. Padded. Half finger. Full but index and thumb.

Try and see what works for you. And what fits. Some of my fave work and cold weather gloves come from hardware stores and logging supply stores.
