Re: Miracle Product

Here's an interesting new product. It looks like it might prevent a hull from getting wet. If this is true, it seems that it might reduce wetted surface friction. Might also prevent fouling??

Those nanoproducts are great for about ten minutes. Then they become unbonded from whatever they were ionically attached to and float away. They lack a way to adhere permanently to whatever it is you are trying to protect. They make for killer infommercials though.

Wax toilet bowl rings are for the landlubbers thrones, and Blue Stocking was right that the PO's used it for whipping twine; ie: small chunks were missing. (Unless, of course, the PO's were mounting a Kohler Cimarron on the poop deck somewhere.) Don't use it for your onboard plumbing needs unless you're reseating your sink baskets.

Re: Miracle Product

This stuff is OK as an addition to good plugs, soft wood or rubber. But not a replacement for them or other emergency patching material. Many thru-hulls that sink boats are often broken off at the hull leaving a large ragged circlular hole with only the thickness of the hull material to adhere to. Fancy wax just won't cut it.
I think a good discussion in light of the other thread on abandoning ship would be how are you prepared for a holing? There's alot more to know about cruising than triming the sails. I think this is one subject very often overlooked.

Re: Miracle Product

To mount my "shoot through the hull" depth sounder transducer I stuck a big glob of toilet ring wax to the inside of the hull and pushed the transducer down into it. It allows the transducer bottom to be horizontal as the signal can pass through the wax as long as there are no air bubbles or voids in it. I put it in about three years ago no problem with it yet.

Very Original Idea. I like it. Sounds better than the mineral oil filled encapsulation for thru-the-hull transducers.

Sounds a bit like the nikwax clothes coating stuff - it's amazing what they keep coming up with?!

I don't know if it would reduce friction though because it says it is silicone based....

I couldn't agree more. There is so much talk of MOB drills, and capsizing, but very little about holing. Please don't think I have this stuff on the boat as a safety item, it just is great for fixing small leaks where a complete re-bedding of something might be overkill, such as a leaky window gasket. There is really nothing better for plugging a blown through hull that a wooden or rubber peg.

So many production boat, mine included, are built with awkward hull liners that leave little access to areas below the waterline. This, and not my lack of a long full keel makes this boat less of a blue water boat than almost anything else. That and my profusion of seemingly ridiculous thru hulls. Oh and did I mention all of the repairs that I've done with toilet bowl wax?

So, Aussies don't use wax rings to set their toilets? I've used hundreds of these things. My life has been really shitty..........
