As promised, here's a brief review on the Magma Flopper Stoppers we started using four weeks ago. At most
anchorages we set one flopper stopper off the boom which takes about five minutes and also serves to eliminate shading issues with the
solar panels mounted on top of the
Bimini. If the anchorage is somewhat rolly or we plan on staying more than one day, it only takes 8-10 minutes to add the extra stopper off the
spinnaker pole. We've given up on the suggestion by the manufacturer to mount one off the bow roller, as we've found one there to be totally useless. Doesn't stop the rocking and can interfere with the
anchor rode, I also tried it off a point near the bow... no effect.
Today at an anchorage in
Croatia, just the right conditions existed to do a review of the Magma Flopper Stoppers. A windy night last evening has produced a swell that would normally really get the
boat rolling side to side. Not large waves, but just the right frequency.
Although not miracle workers because we do get some minimal roll, they do reduce and stop the pendulum roll as you can see the other
boats are experiencing. We get approximately the same movement as a
catamaran, minimal but not quite as jerky. The flopper stoppers are 12ft below the surface.
When I look at the many catamarans in the
anchorages and compare the movement, we are now very similar except the movement of our
boat isn't as jerky, probably due to the heavy
keel which slows down any movement. Please note, that it's difficult to capture on video the actual amount of side to side roll, because on the boat our
head and eyes act as a visual stabilizer and the
camera (ipad) sort of does the same. All in all the stabilizers have been a success, although when the
wind really kicks up and the boat begins sailing back and forth on the hook, sometimes the safety/retrieval line can get wrapped around the stopper and render it useless. We've now have even this aspect 75% under control... there's a
learning curve.
I hope you enjoy and please ask any questions.
Cheers,
Ken
