Interior Painting

Which would be the best painting for the interior (walls and cabinet doors). Do I have to use the poisonous epoxy ?

Thank you all!

Re: Interior Painting

I have used Interlux Brightsides, rolled and tipped, and have been very happy with it. It does smell pretty bad, but it is very easy to work with. It is a single part paint.

Thank you very much SV! I will check if I can find it here in Fiji.

Re: Interior Painting

I’ve used oil based gloss paints in the last and was never really happy with the finish. This time around I used normal interior paint and not only does it go on quickly without an odour, it dries to a nice smooth finish.

For the bilges I’d always go with epoxy or a bilge specific product.

Re: Interior Painting

I used left over Pettit EZ-Poxy Hull Paint for the bulkheads and exterior house paint for the ceiling and cabin sole.

I painted over the dark old paneling and wood, and replaced the lamps with LED and curtains to shades. Plus I had a new gray 5.5 " settee cushion made.

Then sanded down the cutting board and the counter top and cleaned both.

Nice work! Looks so much better in white than the old panelling, and really brightens the interior. Amazing the difference LEDs can make as well.

Thanks.

The credit goes to my son. I simply couldn't visualize it and kept trying to find a "wood looking" paint.

He painted part of the ceiling and bulkhead around the companionway white and at first I didn't like it but waited a week then continued with it and those pictures are the results.

Tons better than it was before.

The only difference is much higher level of humidity that can generates mould all around but I am just not sure if it will justify the use of epoxy based painting.

Than k you.

Hey Thomm

Great job! I believe that the exterior latex painting will be ok and even prevent the mould.

A couple of notes:

- If you’re getting mold in your boat, the humidity is way too high and I’d be checking for other problems (too much water in the bilge, etc)
- Kitchen and bathroom acrylic paint work great and have anti-mould formulas... I can’t imagine any boat is wetter than a bathroom!
- In 10 years, I’ve never had a proble with internal hardware store acrylic paint used across three boats

Thank you for your reply! Acrylic paint...When I bought the boat it was closed for a year and I believe that was the reason for mold.

Oh yeh that’ll do it. It’s a sad thing that often sellers will basically abandon their boat, save for visits by prospective buyers...

Best thing to avoid mold is airflow, fore to aft. I used to position my dinghy over the forward hatch and leave it open 1”, and then installed two vents over the wheelhouse / rear cabin. Also, whenever I visited I’d open the boat completely up and just let it air...
