My grandfather, who I stopped questioning when I was in my 20's, always said to fill my tanks at dawn and never in the afternoon. Wasn't until college until I realized why he said that... To this day, I only fill up early mornings. The savings are probably miniscule at best, but it all adds up.

The fuel dock at Turtle Bay in Baja was always able to get 7 gallons in a 5 gallon jerry jug. When pressed, their response was 'que milagro!.

Two phrases/words: "thermal mass" and "insulation".

How much do you think the temperature of a large underground storage tank attached to a fuel bowser will change over a day?

I don't know how things are down south but up here fuel VOLUME is corrected for temperature (up here 15C is the standard that is corrected against). In practice what this means is if you could change the fuel temperature (let's say you draw two equal samples from different temperature tanks), you would get a different volume of fuel for each sample.
If you were to let the two samples sit until the temperature was equalized, both samples should read as the same volume (which might be different from the volume the pump shows).
The actual correction factors are fairly small so I don't know if it would be obvious if you were not using a graduated measure.

I think I'll file this under 'problems I wish I had'

So they charge a bit too much for fuel. For a sailboat. That has sails. hmmmm.. Guess I should pass on the 50' sportfish with bigass twins. What sets the price of a good or service? What somebody is willing to pay. If you don't wan't the fuel at the price/ripoff, don't buy it. When in rome.....

Re: Fuel Rip-off in Georgetown, Exumma

The gasoline, the produce, hell, everything except for the rum (Ricardo, $8.40 per bottle) was so much more expensive than in the States, that 10% is just rounding error.

That said, I'm going back next year!

PS. I think we purchased 20 gals of gas, the entire six weeks that we were in Bahamas. Winds were generally very favorable for sailing.

Re: Fuel Rip-off in Georgetown, Exumma

I'm wondering about the container being filled.. it
seems reasonable that it would be subject to changes in it's size under different temperature influences . in fact.. I'm thinking that if it's plastic.. and given the geometry of a fuel container.. that a small degree of expansion or contraction in the perimiter "skin" would make a rather large difference in the volume..

Re: Fuel Rip-off in Georgetown, Exumma

While I suppose that I too would be agro'd about that sort of rigged pump, I'm usually more PO'd about the 40 cents per liter differential between fuel docks and nearby petrol station prices, commonly seen here in "civilized" Australia. They always claim that they need the differential because of small volume, etc, but there are a few fuel docks that manage to stay in business with a 2-3 cent differential. We don't burn much diesel, but it still gripes me when I'm forced by circumstances to patronize such bandits.

Still a great place to visit, though.
Did you use a calibrated measuring can or a jerry can? If the latter, this thread is water cooler conversation at best. Most portable containers hold considerably more than their rated volume due to expansion allowance and material stretch over time (they bulge).

Shorting folks is criminal even in the Bahamas, and the locals would lynch them.

Quite unlikely without proof. Just sayin'.
