Experience with Ocean Brezze A/Cs?

Bought a boat (sail) recently with two Ocean Breeze A/C units. Seemed like a bonus, we would not have to budget for A/C. Turns out the two units are almost unusable. They cool just fine but the noise the compressors make could wake the dead.
The unit in the salon vibrates so badly that I can feel it come on while sitting in the cockpit. The noise is enough to almost make conversation impossible. The unit in the aft cabin is mounted on rubber shock mounts and is somewhat better but will still wake you up at night when the compressor kicks in.
Sent an audio recording to Ocean Breeze and was told that the noise was a bad fan bearing due to lack of maintenance. Told them repeatedly that the we run the fans all the time and the noise only comes with the compressor running.
Their solution is to send the units back to the factory to be refurbished. The units are 6-7 years old.
We owned a 1984 boat which we sold in 2007, bad move, and the original A/C units were still working. Replaced the three knob controls and an occasional squirt of R22 was all the maintenance they ever required.
The two Ocean Breeze units are obviously going to the dumpster when finances allow.
Just curious if anyone has any positive results with Ocean Breeze?

Re: Experience with Ocean Brezze A/Cs?

Have you looked at the housing that holds the unit together?
We find that the older ones will develop a harmonic/vibration/rattle over time due to the various different pieces of thin gauged metal that are in contact with each other.
Many times this can be fixed by shimming between or bending the metal a bit until it stops.
The compressor is /or should be on rubber vibe mounts.
All the newer Dometic units we install also have a rubber pad on the bottom of the pan.

Re: Experience with Ocean Brezze A/Cs?

Finally got a reply from Ocean Breeze that seems to make sense. They feel that someone added some incompatible Freon at some point which is causing the compressor problems. If we get the units to Stuart they will take care of the problem or to get a local A/C tech to check it out. Getting the units to Stuart is not so easy from TX. One local tech told me he only works on units he is familiar with. Another offered to come out at $100/hour.
Not sure yet as to what to do.
