Compass for a Bunk

Years ago, someone mad a compass that was mounted above a bunk so you could check the course without going to the helm. Does anyone still making a compass like that?

Re: Compass for a Bunk

Plenty of new and used general aviation aircraft compasses around that work well for this purpose

Re: Compass for a Bunk

Those are designed to mount on a virtual Bulkhead. I need one to mount above my bunk, so I can look at it from below.
Thank you

Re: Compass for a Bunk

Celestaire used to sell a compass that could be mounted horizontally above a berth. I just checked their website and they are no longer listed.

I considered buying one of those despite their relatively high cost, but bought this Silva instead: https://www.celestaire.com/product/silva-70une-compass/

It can be mounted upside down, but I have not done that. I use my iPhone instead and have the Silva mounted on a bulkhead in the main cabin in order to keep an eye on course while down below.

Re: Compass for a Bunk

It's called a "telltale compass". I found some online, but they're antiques listed for around US$1,500.

FWIW, I once used a bulkhead mounted unit just above the foot end of the bunk. I could see it easily from the head end of the bunk.

I understand this might not suit your situation.

Re: Compass for a Bunk

I use the Plastimo Iris 100 hand bearing compass for this. It can be mounted overhead (or any other angle) and the card is read from the edge. It slides in and out of the bracket and is a versatile compass. A disadvantage is that it doesn't show N, S, E, W from the card edge (only at the top) so you need to understand degrees or look from above it. https://www.landfallnavigation.com/i...c-compass.html

Re: Compass for a Bunk

A tablet and OpenCPN does a lot better job and you can use the anchor watch when at anchor.

Re: Compass for a Bunk

Wondering if something like these would work, in lieu of a real telltale compass?

Re: Compass for a Bunk

I installed a nice telltale compass in my Tartan 34. The big hassle was getting 12 V DC so it would be lit at night. It looked very cool, but if I was to do it again I would use an app that has its own backlight.

Re: Compass for a Bunk

Do a search for “overhead compass”. But before you type it in check your bank account status .

Re: Compass for a Bunk

This might be overkill for a lot of folks, but after messing around with half measures (apps on iphone, etc) I finally decided that our peace of was worth $800. and installed a B&G Vulcan that we can see easily from our bed, networked to our B&G Zeus at the helm, added an external alarm buzzer and now we have a reliable anchor alarm and can see wind speed, navigational info, everything we can do and see at the helm.

As full time cruisers we live at anchor most of the time and peace of mind while in bed is pretty important to us. It does add some light to the cabin while sleeping but we use night mode and dim the screen at the lowest light to be readable. Best night light ever!
