Re: Can any one identify a source for this tool?

Probably McMaster Carr. I use one for tensioning engine belts. Grainger is another source

It’s a Belt Tightener. Search on line by that name or buy one from a major auto parts supplier.

I once punched a hole in a Balmar alternator using a screwdriver. Didn't affect it working but at $500 it was a "don't do that again" moment. Now I use the handle end of a hammer. Rubber coated and much larger contact area. But the screw jack is better, puts tension on the pulleys using the pulleys alone. No pressure on anything else.

We'd like to replace but may try welding if another can't be found.
Thanks in advance for any helpful answers.
Try Moyer marine , the Afourians

Re: Can any one identify a source for this tool?

I too own the MSC product. It is not "junk". It works well and it can be broken if mishandled. It works far better than trying to hold a lever in place to set belt tension... that old technique requires 3 hands. Using this device, both of your 2 hands are available to set and tighten the alternator. I have not found a better product.

And by using this MSC product, you can accurately measure and set the belt tension with a tool like the Gates 91132 Krikit V-Ribbed Belt Tension Gauge or the Gates 91107 Krikit V-Ribbed Belt Tension Gauge. This is FAR more accurate than guessing by pressing on the belt with your thumb. Studies have shown that the old "use your thumb" technique is WRONG more than 90% of the time.

Same here. Ours broke and had to be re-welded. But very handy tool, so worth the trouble.

I made a similar device with white oak and 3/8 all thread with nuts and washers. Has come in handy a couple times over the last 45 years.
