Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
As the title states, I am looking for any thoughts/reviews/comparisons between the two listed paints, or if anyone has anything else to recommend. This is what I'm looking for:
-Hard
-Red
-Going to be in Atlantic waters/Mediterranean
I have used the PPG ABC3 before and it is somewhat of a hybrid hard/ablative paint that did well in the entire Caribbean. I have not used Pettit Trinidad 75 but hear good things.
Thoughts?

There is only one hard paint that this hull diver ever recommends and that is Trinidad. Any flavor, any color.

Thanks fstbttms. Are there any major differences in the Trinidad line? I am eyeing the Trinidad 75, but I see there is the regular Trinidad, HD, SR, and Pro.

I have never noticed any difference in performance between any of the Trinidad line of products.

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
Been using ABC3 for 20 years. Routinely get 4 years life out of it in Caribbean and east coast of US from Rhode Island to Florida Keys. Haven't priced Trinidad for a while but ABC3 had always been much lower priced than the "yacht" type paints.

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
I have used both. I found the much lower cost of PPG with similar performance, as Petite, characteristics to be a strong incentive To use the PPG, particularly when the vessel is in the 40 to 70 ft size. I have been puzzled as to why PPG is not more marketing oriented, as it is a good product. Also, the us Navy & Uscg both use it...

Also, on a steel hull, I’ve used the PPG primer, with after 3 years on a steel hull, very good results!!!

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
i've always used trinidad and love it, mostly. get the one with the highest copper content. easily got four or five years in florida and the bahamas.
mostly. it's a hard paint, not ablative. after fifteen years of putting successive coats on the bottom it has to be removed. not a pleasant job. i did it myself and would never do it again.

PPG markets ABC3 as a commercial paint for shipyard use only. It is widely known among commercial shipyards. Let's hope they don't start marketing it for recreational vessels as the marketing costs to get into yachting magazines, etc., will drive up the price!

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
hands down...no ifs, ands and buts...Pettit Trinidad....don't waste your time with anything else..you can get with a slime reducing agent....but that is probably more gimicky than anything else...

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
Glad to see the positive reviews on the ABC3 here. I loved that paint on my previous boat and it performed great in the Caribbean, but I think I'd like a harder paint and the Trinidad seems it will fit the bill, in red.

I’ve used Trinidad SR from 2003 to 2017 on both fresh water (2003-2007) and salt since then. Three years ago they stopped using Irgarol (an Algecide) which was to discourage formation of slime. The replacement is Trinidad Pro used by my yard. I’ve had that on the bottom since 2017 and I’m approaching 3 years. No slime but I have a diver brush the bottom every couple of months in colder weather and more frequently in warmer weather. He says the paint is still in good condition.

Re: Bottom Paint: Pettit Trinidad 75 vs. PPG ABC3
I have had great results over the last 23 years using Trinidad. My latest project will also have Trinidad after the removal of what ever is on it now and an Interlux 2000 barrier coat.

Another strong rec for Trinidad 75 after using it for past 40 years in Miami.
Worth the higher cost.
