Re: Binoculars

Check pawn shops in towns with a strong fishing and boating community. I got my Steiners and Canon stabilized glasses for cents on the dollar.....

Currently have 18x50 stabilized Canon with 3.7* stabilization. Very useful and very steady. The batteries need replacing every other week, but AAs are cheap.....

For $30, a strap that provides floatations is cheap insuranceClick image for larger version

Weems & Plath 7x50 Explorer Binoculars

I am in the market for a good set of marine binoculars. I was interested in the Steiner Marine II which are apparently made for West Marine. They have all the major features for about $500. Recently I discovered that Weems and Plath's Explorer model has essentially the same features for about $260. I realize you pay extra for the Steiner name.

Does anyone have experience with the Weems and Plath model?

Re: Binoculars

I have used a pair of Fujinon Polaris 7x50 milspec (armored) binds for 18 years. Not cheap, but bombproof. Not a fan of the Billy-in compasses.

It looks like a new product. I hadn't heard of it despite extensive searching and no Amazon reviews. W&P has a good reputation for non binocular products.

Re: Binoculars

That W&P Explorer has "Steiner" written all over it. I've had the Steiner, and frankly preferred my WWII surplus B&L 7x50s. Purchasing for a summer field school, I was able to find the manufacturer in each case of the West Marine binoculars, and ergo a better price. My wife's pair of non-West Marine West Marine binoculars are optically as good as mine, and have the advange of being water proof (wash them off in the galley), bump protected, and floating with a bouyant strap.

Re: Binoculars

For example, this pair of Barska's may look familiar to you:
