Many people buy 7x50 but I find them too difficult in a small boat.

Anyways look for maximum brightness, minimum weight and plenty of robustness. All this implies price.

We have Nikons WP 7x50 and they are outstanding quality and value BUT as I said a bit too heavy and to strong for me. So I could get another, smaller pair, or a quality mono.

I have Steiner and Fujinon Technostabis 14x. I go to the Fujinon every time as a first choice. I've got to say how impressed I am by the Fujinon. With the stabilisation feature more like a power of 20x. Just awesome. I can see my neighbour's password as they log on to private banking. If only I were of a dishonest disposition... Not to mention the perving possibilities. They burn up batteries though

I have image stabalised Canon binos and they are absolutely brilliant! They eat up pretty much any normal seastate movement.

I owned a pair of Fujinon MTR-SX 7x50 for almost 30 years using them from the northern Atlantic to the Caribbean and, despite their heavy weight, it is still the best binocular I ever bought.
5 years ago, I bought a cheap pair with Steiner looks ( you can find them under different name: Barska, Celestron, BetaOptics ...) all the same, lighter, poor optics , a specially at night and really fragile. One of the eyecup fell apart after 1 week, then the compass started leaking,finally, the rubber coating became gummy and fell apart.
Thereafter, I bought a pair of Steiner Navigator Pro, I would say these are good quality/price binocular, lighter than my Fuginon, I would say as strong ( used them for two years of extensive cruising in the Caribbean), the optics is not as clear at night as the Fujinon but my wife prefer their weight.
My personal recommendation , invest in good quality and think long term.

Stabilized binoculars are amazing. You cannot believe the difference. Watch for them on sale - I got mine (Fujinon) at half list price from B&H Photo on Black Friday.

I've had my old Pentax 7x50 Marines for about 30 years, they stay down below until needed. A set of inexpensive small rubber coated waterproof hunters binocs from Cabelas hang by the strap in the cockpit always. They really are either waterproof or very water resistant.

I do like the image stabilization but not enough to go out and buy a new pair. If the Pentax ever go overboard or somehow get destroyed then pretty sure I would.

I got to the boat yesterday, checked out the model number of the Canon Image stabilised binos.

Here they are, looks like they were made up to seven years ago, so there's probably something better now, but honestly, they are just unspeakably good. I will NEVER want any other.

Unless I break them. That would be sad.

This seems to be them, except the link says AA batteries, whereas mine use button batteries, so maybe I have a later version?

+1 on the Fujinons. Their electron beam coatings give a very bright image. Perhaps the brightest. They will allow you to see things that other bonocs will not show.

As has been noted an exit pupal greater than your actual pupal diameter will not add to the image brightness. So for many people a 7 x 35 has about the same brightness as a 7 x 50.

However resolving power is a function of the objective diameter. That is to say the ability to see 2 objects that are close together as 2 rather than 1 object.

I have a pair of Fujinon Mariner 7x50 WPC-XL have found them to be very good, not the cheapest $250 but work well had them for the past 12months hope this helps
