In today's 'Lectronic Latitude there's a strange story of the theft of a J-105 from its slip at San Francisco Marina:

Not So Good Timin'

November 14, 2007 – Pillar Point, South of San Francisco

As we reported on Monday, Chris Perkins' J/105 Good Timin' was stolen from its slip at San Francisco Marina sometime over the weekend. We are happy to announce today that Chris was reunited with his boat on Monday afternoon in Pillar Point Harbor, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. Aside from a few scuffs and missing items, the boat seems to be in sound condition, though Perkins has yet to do a thorough survey. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the thief. Here's the story as we understand it:

One would have to conclude that Dan Pond isn't the brightest light in the harbour. LOL

About mid-day Monday, Pillar Point Assistant Harbormaster John Draper received a cellphone call from a guy claiming distress offshore. Draper called the Coast Guard and they went out to render assistance. What do you know: the boat in trouble was Good Timin'. When the wetsuit-clad man aboard saw that his saviours were the Coast Guard, he jumped in the water and tried to swim away.

That's messed up.

I agree. Theives are often so lacking in smarts, it's amazing. A guy I know who went to jail for credit card fraud made the mistake of having the items he purchased on stolen card numbers delivered TO HIS HOUSE! Duh...

The guy in this story made a few mistakes too:

*Stole a sailboat. I mean c'mon - that's like "grand theft horse." How are you going to get away quickly enough? He's 50 miles down the coast, where there is basically only 3 ways to go - coastline north, coastline south or Pacific crossing. Duh.

*Stole a J105. While they are common, they are not that common that you couldn't spot one easily.

*Called for help... but then when I got to the part of the story about modifying the boat to make it "surf faster", it was readily apparent that Pond is indeed "off his meds" and has some kind of mental illness.

I guess he was just suffering from mental problems that were taken out on a boat, rather than on another person or a more common thing like a car. Sounds like he needs help.

To your list of Dan Pond's mistakes, the following might be added:

*No food aboard.

*No weather gear">foul weather gear.

*Left his car in the St. Francis Yacht Club parking lot.

Truly a sad tale - let's hope the man gets the help he needs.
