What NOT to take cruising?

I've got too much stuff. Even upgrading to a bigger boat, I have too much stuff.

What did you find was NOT used on your last cruise? What do most people bring that they can do without? I have tools, spares, and lots of "boat bits". What can be left behind without compromising safety or enjoyment?

We did not use our scuba tanks. Heavy and a pain to fill. Mask/snorkel/fins were used tonnes though! You can always rent tanks.

to many sets of clothes,shoes,to many pots pans and the big one ,scuba tanks and the various and sundrie accouchements that it requires to operate such equitment,I remember sailing around micronesia and mostly free diving for any food that we wanted and only using the tanks for leling(top shell) and night fishing for parrots...seemed like a lot of space was taken by the gear for the lack of return on enjoyment..The boat was only 37 ft or so and narrow and there were 3-5 people at times on board for a weekend at a time,that didnt help matters any and would have been bad in itself,all that gear made it worse..Cant ever have enough spare engine parts(always good for bartering if nothing else)and a life raft(debatable) Ive noticed a few folks at the marina go overboard(pun)with rescue gear,all the electro gadgets and such and not much on things like rough weather gear,lot to do with what you might need rather than what someone else might need...

- got rid of a lot of clothes.
- only have four pairs of shoes. crocs, sneakers, flipflops, and foulie boots.
- our sailrite.
- my short board.
- my paddleboard before the pacific crossing.
- the sailkit for my walker bay.
- some tools that i can make do with others.
- the hot water heater.
- the microwave.
- almost all our paper books.
- pressurized water.

Honestly we're always getting rid of stuff. We've lived on our boat for 7 years coastal cruising and have been in Mexico for about a year now and even yesterday I was getting rid of DVD's, spare trash bags, spare zip ties, and a football.

Things I have that I wouldn't part with that others might:

+ exercise gear (kettlebells, gymnast rings)
+ scuba tank
+ nice trolling rig, crappy spin rig
+ staysail boom

This is good stuff, CF'ers! Keep it up! What else fits better in the thrift shop bag than in the settee lockers?

I would also get rid of my old attitudes and preconceptions about people and places. Actually, forget about that. Those will blow up all along your journey one by one and you will come back a different and better person.
