What is that thing on my new jacket?

Hi all,
I just owned a Gill OS1 jacket and trousers. On both there is a openable plastic something (see pics attached).
Can someone tell me what that is for?

Thx & Cheers
Dirk

I think it's for attaching a PLB.

Re: What is that thing on my new jacket?

Attaching a PLB makes sence and that was my thought too.
But which one would fit?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thx
Dirk

Re: What is that thing on my new jacket?

Nice jacket!

The Gill website indicates that, as suggested above, the device is for attaching a PLB. We have two brands of PLB and each could be adapted to work with the attachment point in your photos.

However, we keep ours attached to our PFDs which we always wear. We wear our weather gear">foul weather gear, of course, during foul weather. Keeping the PLBs attached to our PFDs is more convenient for us.

The pic shows a Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB attached to a Spinlock PFD.

Re: What is that thing on my new jacket?

I'm going to sail the Biskaya and the engl. Channel, starting end of January. So I suggest, that I will wear foul weather clothes

However, in daylight and calm winds under 30kts we normally don't wear our PFDs until we don't have to go to the mast (picked in of course).

Still open is the brand that would fit. Is it the RescueMe?
Maybe, you can give me a link to the gill website with the description? The German sites show nothing

Thx a lot.

Here is the OS1 on the Gill website:

Point well taken, and well noted, regarding appropriate clothing for your sailing region

Thx for the link :-)

Nevertheless - no brand and type mentioned.

Or do have all PLBs the same attachment method (which would mean, that there is a worldwide standard)?

Cheers

In that sailing area and that time of year, I would respectfully suggest that you wear your PFDs every moment you're on deck.

It's precisely "daylight and calm winds" that create the false equivalency that you couldn't just as easily go overboard at those times. In January, calm winds or not, a person overboard in those temps would be survival conditions.

It's deceptive, I know, but why not err on the side of caution...?

Fair winds,

Last call (hopefully) - is there anybody who know's for which brand (and possibly type) of PLBs this plastic clip is made for to fit?
Or does fit every PLB, because it's a standard mount?

Thx to all who knows...

Re: What is that thing on my new jacket?

My two cents, I would not recommend attaching an PLB or MOB device to a sailing jacket or trousers. I would only recommend installing it to a life jacket.
On clothing, you would be required to remember to uninstall and instal your PLB every time you change.
In your life jacket you just need to wear to it.'

Good advice. Many years ago when I was learning to SCUBA dive and dive computers were starting to become common (late 1980's, at least where I was diving), I moved the computer from the dive console to a wrist mount because it was easier to see. My older dive buddy said this was a bad idea because from time to time I would forget to put it on in the scramble to get in the water and out of the tropical sun. If the computer was in the console, I would always have it. He was right and I ended up moving it back to the console.

As posted earlier, we normally do not leave the dock without wearing PFDs. When it became too hot to wear them, we moved the PLBs to our harnesses, which we also always had on if in the cockpit because we were tethered.
