A friend uses "The Spot" gps device when remote fishing. Has anyone used one while cruising? Any knoledge of coverage in the Caribbean?

s/v HyLyte loaned me his SPOT Messenger for a passage from Antigua to Nevis, and on to St Thomas. From St Thomas we headed through the Bahamas and around to Tampa Bay.

It worked quite well. A few transmissions were lost between Antigua and Nevis, and again for a 100 nm or so stretch between San Salvador and Eleuthera. Other than that, it performed flawlessly.

I see it primarily as a means to keep family and friends updated on your location.
