Tether Safety Clip Testing

A long round of testing is out from Practical Sailor (March 2018). Triggered by the November Clipper accident, a panel of clips was tortured in every direction, not just a straight pull. They were also tested on jacklines and u-bolts (part II).

The take aways:
  • Some clips are scary weak if jammed sideways or miss-hooked.
  • Not all locking hooks stay locked under pressure.
I see Spinlock's top-line tethers now use Kong Tango hooks. I like them. I started using those about a decade ago.
