Thought that this is a bit of good news...

Drones getting outfitted with software to recognize lifejackets...
automated lifejacket detection enhances search and rescue-operations

I understand that this is better then pigeons on helicopters looking for people, which was a serious project that had merit and was scrapped due to budget pressures... Yea.. I found it a bit hard to believe as well, but... here is a 'source'.
