Thumbs down Second Hand Smoke......

I am looking to purchase a 1985 27' Catalina from a full-time liveaboarder who is a smoker. When he opened the companionway for me to inspect, the smell of cigarettes was almost overwhelming. Can anyone tell me if/how I will be able to get the smell out? Or should I look at a different boat?

Re: Second Hand Smoke......

Had same problem in a caravan, we scrubbed all scrubbable surfaces, aired it and when closed up we put some plates of bi-carbonate of soda on benches tables etc, it absorbs smells very well, finally some car fresheners and more airing.
Make sure curtains bedding and mozzie screens get washed/scrubbed.
Stick with it....

You will need to wipe down everything with an ammonia based cleaner and possibly have to throw out the upholstery and any other cloth items. Even still, it will take some time to rid the boat of the smell, maybe years.

If you can get the boat for below market value I would consider the purchase. It also depends on how sensitive you are to the smell of smoked in homes and vehicles.

You can get the smell out, but it will mean refinishing all wood surfaces, and replacing all cloth surfaces and all of the underlying foam. You'll also spend several days scrubbing all of the hard surfaces several times with various different cleaners to get off all of the nicotine.
Be sure to factor in the cost and time before making an offer on a boat like this.

With all the Catalina 27s out there, my advice would be to keep looking. Buy one where you can spend your money on new sails rather than new upholstery.

A company that does fire remediation probably would be your best source of information regarding getting rid of smoke damage/smell.

An Ozone Generater will remove the smoke smell!! you can rent them from the companys that clean up after home fires and such !! It works Ive had to do it to one we were delivering ! the smell was so bad I could not even go below !! 2 days with 2 of these and it was clean as far as smell was concerned!! I was greatly impressed!! just a thought

Re: Second Hand Smoke......

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Chef Kate.

If you have a fibreglass overhead, you should be able to cleanse the boat of smoke stink.
Every month or so, Maggie used a household cleanser, like comet, on the hard surfaces, and “Febreze” on the upholstery. Worked a charm, and I smoked like a chimney.
