Radar as xray?

So my son broke his wrist today and it got me thinking. Out at sea, doing a crossing, if someone broke a limb, could it be done? You would have to splint or cast regardless. It would obviously be better if things were lined up first. But could it work?
Or possibly with a sonar/ fish finder?

Re: Radar as xray?

No, none of these ideas are at all realistic.

Re: Radar as xray?

Radar emits in wavelengths that are even longer than infrared which is longer than visible. UV is shorter than visible and XRay even shorter still. Radar isn’t even close to the right wavelength. Trying to use radar on the other hand my give you some nerve damage similar to sticking your hand in an operating microwave. That’s why the manufacturers are so careful about door interlocks, the liability of a microwave running with the door open is huge. Note that early microwaves were called radar-ranges.

Putting a sonar transducer probably isn’t going to hurt you but the electronics are all geared to detecting returning signals from 1’ to 600’, not from 0”-3”. And it really isn’t set up to give you an image but a single number.

Re: Radar as xray?

I have found a medical book that calls ultra sounds "glorified fish finder used by fishermen"
But it doesn't really say it's possible to use it as such.
I think you guys are right, the transducer and processor just aren't set up properly. Too bad.Click image for larger version

Re: Radar as xray?

And even if you had a radar of fish finder which emitted radiation of the correct frequency I just cannot see any practical way to haul someone up the mast or under the boat with the sensitive film strapped to the victims offending limb.
