SeaBuffalo wrote "But rubber less than lethal ammo is a great way to defuse a situation where there is a high risk of collateral damage." ==> An excellent solution for Texas, not so useful here in the Philippines where the threat of piracy is somewhat higher but foreigners are NOT allowed to have guns - and the definition of a 'gun' is broad enough to include pellet guns and even air soft toys. As an LEO you might consider the new Taser shot shell for the round in your chamber - and for close work with a riot gun I would suggest replacing your '00' buck shot with bird shot. At the distances on a boat, it is just as lethal but doesn't carry as far and has little penetration ability after it hits something. So your Texas tactical load would be the Taser shot shell, two rubber pellets, two bean bags, and two bird shot - keep your buck shot in the side saddle if this doesn't discourage a persistent miscreant.

Sounds good Bruce.

Jedi as far as close quarters rubber buckshot being lethal it depends on the load you buy. They rate "less than lethal " ammo as its called by range. They offer close quarters being 5-15 feet and then riot being 30-100 feet and some niche ammo for levels in between.

The reason also I recommend a shotgun over a pistol is as was said earlier its viewed differently than a handgun. I'm not saying your not going to get in trouble with authorities is some countries but as was said most view it more of a tool ie hunting.

Maybe a big red "Winchester" sticker on the transom, like the ones Americans put on their trucks.

Very hard to get real handguns here. I've tried. Feel sorry for me Americans!

On the plus side, I believe I can have a small signal cannon if I register it.

pirate Re: Piracy :-/ People and Pythons

The other plus for rubber/birdshot is MAYBE it won't blow a hole in yer cockpit. I switched to a short 12 gauge to combat pythons that will soon be crawling onto boats in the Everglades/Keys area. Probably a good area to avoid.

Your average python will be tougher to handle than a couple of stoners after yer dink engine. I couldn't even hit the water with my .357. I can, however, always hit the water with my golf swing.

Plus I'm hoping pythons will be more likely to target the older cruising couple with the matched set of yappy dogs.

Clearly a pitch for a bigger budget and larger staff - and they are going to use them for 'research' or 'training'? All 100K? Get serious - the only way that might solve this problem is to put a bounty on the head of the offending reptile - and distribute tasty recipes so Bubba can BBQ the rest of the snake on the tailgate while its still fresh. No tags required, no season; we eat rattlesnake out west so I see no reason that python wouldn't 'taste like chicken'.

You mean the majority of people who preach about guns etc that really are nothing but someone who falls into: 1 - false courageous or 2 -stupid brave?

Regular people could probaly use some protection from all the bad asses or idiots!

Don... realistically you face as much danger from the guy anchored next to you or having a drink in a bar as you do from being boarded and robbed by locals... what I find is the guys who rant about guns are the ones who've never travelled outside the US.. and in some case's the UK.. (but in the main these are racists who'd never be happy outside their 'comfort zone'.. other white folk..) in the real sense of the word...
A 2 week package holiday is not seeing the world... its peeping round the curtain..
Hate to say it but the place I was most nervous was in the states... just to many guns.

pirate Re: Python Piracy

Yepper. Government "service" is where the US economy is growing. Elsewhere too, I'm sure.

I'm always trotting out this python story as an advisory. To think they've been breeding in the 'Glades sans predators for SIX years now is truly scary, at least to me. The python threat is already an environmental disaster. 99% of the rats, coons, and foxes are already gone. There's only 100 panthers left. Salt crocs will soon be gone, I guess. What is our response? Research and Training.

The US has a gazillion bubbas armed and ready and EAGER to tackle this issue.

There were hundreds of hurricane holes in this general area in the past but are you going to tie yer boat into the mangroves any more?

Piracy. Pythons.
