Opinion on West Marine PDF sale?

Hi all, I need to get a basic offshore inflatable pdf for an upcoming liveaboard course. WestMarine has a 50% off this model:

WEST MARINE Offshore Sail Automatic Inflatable Life Jacket | West Marine

Could you give me your opinions as to wether it is a good value? This will be my first offshore PDF for mostly coastal cruising and crewing on local Great Lakes boat during the season. I'm a rookie so my understanding of the nuances of the different offshore inflatables is minimal.

Thanks for your feedback!
BB.

Re: Opinion on West Marine PDF sale?

That is the model I have been using for the past four years. My wife recently bought one as well. I have worn it for about 200 days and do not see any unusual wear, though there is a load of sunscreen around the neck. The sale price is unbelievable; in fact, despite not having too much money at the moment, we might pick up two for guests. It would be hard to go wrong at that price. Even if you decide you want a more comfortable one - or one with a groin strap - later, you can always hold on to this LJ for guests or backup.

I concur, it is the same model I have and what great price. I'm going to order a couple for guests also.

That looks like a great sale on a good product with desirable features.

I think it is nice and thoughtful that some are buying them for guests, since nobody likes to wear the commonly offered $5 cheapo orange blocky foam PFDs that are the only type most boats have for guests.

I also use this same vest and it's seems to be holding up well and it's pretty comfortable. Easy to add a crotch strap to also.

Life jackets, the sport vest type, are one of the few things you can get cheap at Worst Marine.

Re: Opinion on West Marine PDF sale?

Went to WM for a PFD for the biggest grand. Put the WM one back and got the Mustang. The arm holes in the WM $20 vest are too big and without a crotch strap they are worse than useless. Spent $50 and got the Mustang for the kids.

If you buy the WM or any inflatable PFD get and use crotch/groin straps. If you have any doubt about the veracity of my post, tryout the inflatable in a pool. 99.9% sure you will see that ether PFD a rides up. There have been several well documented fatalities from PFDs riding up.

Re: Opinion on West Marine PDF sale?

Yes, I agree that a crotch strap, no matter what the vest, is essential. I have them with my WM PFD.
