Even with just the reflective striping & nav lights I have to fight the urge to hang a few bulbs from the boom ...

I'll disagree. I think you are implying that the light provided by the sail directly mimics a navigation light. Would you consider an entire flopping (or taught) panel of red or green sailcloth (or maybe a nice yellow), glowing gently, to be a confusion as to the markings of a vessel? I'm thinking of preventing close-in collisions, not a means of acquiring the vessel at a distance. But again, I am wondering if this has some relevancy and trying to imagine an application beyond what prescribed navigation lights would signal.
