Marina theft issues
It appears that the folks stealing Catalyitic Converters and aluminum siding and other scrap have found a new resource.... Power cables. A few days ago 10+ boats, including mine, in our local marina here in Annapolis had their shore power cables stolen. I am guessing there is only about $3-4 worth of copper (Scrap value) in one but they cost about $100 USD for a new one. Yes... I feel violated and would like to kill the perps.

Re: Marina theft issues
A replacement shore power cable costs US$100 - wow that sounds a lot. Do you need to use some sort of special cable for shore power?
I feel for you & the other boat owners though, damn thieves - you could just strangle them!

Re: Marina theft issues
That sucks, there was similar theft in the building industry with copper water pipes so they went to plastic.
It's a hard to go to plastic power cable but perhaps an alarm can be set up to go off when your boat loses power.
Might be a pain in the middle of the night if you loose power but worth considering.

Re: Marina theft issues
Copper is practically GOLD to a 'scrapper'. They've been stealing water pipes and electrical wiring from houses for a dozen years now. I was a real estate inspector for a while in Ohio and I'd say more than 60% of the houses on the market had been broken into and stripped clean.
It's a rapidly growing industry in the US.
Now that everyone knows that marina's are a good place to rob (thanks!), this will spread exponentially.

Re: Marina theft issues
A drug addicted guy in nearby Houma, Louisana was stealing wires from an operating power station.
He cut the wrong wire, ZAP!! Hasn't stolen a thing since, nor will he.

Re: Marina theft issues
Marrina theft is becomming a big problem, here in Fl a close friend of mine had all his electronics stolen, and a dozen or so other boats had motors and electronics stolen. The value of used electonicis is not much but to someone despirate, $50.00 bucks is worth the risk, my friend had to come up with 5 grand to replace something that I am sure the thief got next to nothing for.

Yep same thing happened to me at a yard near annapolis down from jabins. Only I was sleeping in the boat and though slow to awaken scared him off. He tried another boat a few days later but the owner also living aboard realized something was amiss when the 110 went off. brazen. This guy was targeting boats on the hard that had the cords visible or plugged in.

Re: Marina theft issues
People who steal scrap metal are close to the lowest form of life on this planet.
The bronze plaque was stolen from my Mother's gravestone. My Father, a truly honourable man, was devastated by this theft. It was a widespread problem, but Dad lobbied the Cemetary Trust to change the mode of attaching plaques to make it far more difficult to steal. It was not an easy task to get the Trust to agree, as it was more expensive. However, I can tell you that Len Ralph now rests in peace under an anti-theft plaque!
