Exclamation Malaria in the Exumas

On June 16 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued a warning to U.S. travelers to the Exumas, particularly Georgetown, concerning an outbreak of malaria. There have been 16 confirmed cases, mostly among local residents, some of whom may have traveled recently to Haiti. The government is recommending travelers take chloroquine prophylactically. The warning in its entirety can be found at www.cdc.gov/travel. Updated information can also be obtained from the State Dept. at 1-888-407-4747.

Thanks for the heads up, Harriet - I never would have guessed it.

The full warning is posted under:
http://www.cdc.gov/travel/other/2006...ia_bahamas.htm

and includes the following mitigating statement:

”... At this time, CDC is recommending chloroquine as an antimalarial medication for travelers to Great Exuma. This recommendation is expected to be temporary and does not apply to other islands of the Bahamas ...”
