Re: Looking for dewatering pump options

A 2" Honda powered trash pump could do a lot. You can buy canned gas that is stabilized. Could fog it and shrink wrap it along with the gas. Get all prepper on it. Better off spending the money on making the boat unsinkable but still, if you have the space, good for salvage operations. Don't expect it to last to long after you get it salty though.

Re: Looking for dewatering pump options

I have a 2" Harbor Freight pump with aftermarket bi-fuel carb; have tested it 4 times in fresh water using propane only (carb hasn't seen gasoline). Have a ?15ft extension hose to run off 20# tank or can use 1# bottle; with propane I'm less concerned about gasoline gumming things up. Currently pickled in a bag in the lazarette waiting for an on-deck box solution. Rated for 9,000 gph could be used as a firefighting handline...it moves water. I probably have $300-350 into the whole kit.

I've got a pilothouse with large ports/windows and otherwise wouldn't have purchased it if not going offshore. It's relatively small and lightweight but the steel tube frame is thin/biodegradable. If I ever use it in salt water I'll certainly take the pump apart soon after inspect/clean.

A proper trash pump, with right nozzle could help with fending off the pirates. If it dies maybe bop em on the head. Sorry wrong thread

Re: Looking for dewatering pump options

If I am offshore and need to pump enough water to keep 2" or 3" de-watering hose running at full flow for a while, I am reluctant to rely on 12V to be involved.

I also don't want to carry gasoline in jerrycans as this would be the only gasoline consumer.

rule 3700 is my main bilge pump. I doubt this would be able to keep up in an emergency.

Running the 120V/240V electric pump off of the generator is an option provided I can ensure AC power source is is not down when boat is partially submerged. I think this is possible

Running off engine might be too much.

That custom rig with Ericson Safety looks very good. Thanks.

Re: Looking for dewatering pump options

I suspect that if your bilge pump is not keeping up, your best option is to radio mayday then grab ditch bag and launch dinghy. After that its time to see if placing a patch, garbage bag, or whatever over the hole from underneath can stabilize the situation. As others have noted, the math of water flow from small holes can easily overtake the best of pumps so your priority has to be reducing the inflow if possible.
