Lock your dink....

Hey folks,

We're headed from titusville to the keys next month and I read that you should lock your dink... okay. I've got a stazo lock on the outboard but just how are you locking your dink? To something solid (ideal) using what locking devices??? Ideas, suggestions?

thanks!

I lost a 1 month old dink once because I did not lock it soo from then on I made a 12' SS 3/8'' life line with 2 hoops I can lock with a good lock,I run it through the motor and dink-to the dock
ANyone know if there is a small gps transmitter that could be stuck inside the engine cover in case there was a loss?

Locking your dink is no guarantee that it won't be stolen. The best bet when at anchor is to haul it, either in davits or with a halyard. A couple of years ago, in Miami they were using scuba gear to get up to a dink, cut the wire locking line, and tow it to a waiting boat. A cruiser saw a dink "drifting" upwind and raised the alarm. For locking my dink when ashore I have a length of lifeline wire, passed through the gas tank and life jackets and lifting rings. For the outboard I have a short thick bicycle lock cable that's passed through the lifting ring and outboard and locked. As for locks, the one on the outboard is a big brass one and the one used on docks is a simple combination lock so I don't have to carry keys around with me.

You could use a good quality plastic coated bicycle cable and lock, although I use a short length of some anchor chain and a good quality padlock. You can attach it to the towing eye on your inflatable, or to the outboard if it is properly locked, and then run it around a dock piling, or through a stantion base or under a cleat on deck.

Best idea I've seen is to fit an oversize drain plug below the waterline. Secure the dink on shore, or on a dock, and take the plug with you. Now it simply can't be launched without sinking it.

GPS in the engine? Would work if the engine cover was plastic, and you supplied power to the tracker. $150-200 would buy you a Zoombak, which is about the cheapest, plus another $150 for the annual contract on it.

You can do something direct with APRS, if you are a licensed ham radio operator, but that will still cost you a couple of hundred to set up.

A buddy of mine takes his spark plugs when he goes. A length of the kryptonite cable (I think they come up to 18 feet) with one loop around the outboard and the other around a tree with a big lock works well when ashore.

I've found bike locks to be a bit short at times, so I made my own cable instead. I lock it to the outboard, run it under the floorboards and throught the front metal eyelet and out to what ever I lock it to.

Great suggestions on the drain plug and sparkplug.
