The VW "Peoples' Car" was a fine piece of economy engineering, but they had their shortcomings when price was not the sole criteria.

Putting an anchor in a bow roller is likely to add 6-10" to the overall length of many vessels. That means another foot when you enter a marina, and I can suspect that makes a good selling point to buyers. (What, I'm the only one who has ever said "OUCH!" ?)

The Trabant has its fuel tank on top of the engine. The fuel is gravity fed in to the carburettor.
To fill up (and check how much you still have left) you lift the bonnet.

In Australia we have composite gas cylinders which don't rust and have a clear window so you can see the gas level.

They are, but it shouldn't make any difference over Propane, until you go high latitude sailing when Butane stops becoming a gas at low temperatures.

Shame the gas cylinders aren't better secured though. Even a divers weight belt around them and bolted to the bulk head would help.

Composite cyls. are available in N.A. also,but they must be inspected every 5 yrs. here.
Steel & aluminum cyls. must be hydrostatically tested & have valves replaced every 10 yrs here.

Composite gas cylinders are becoming common here too. One issue however is that they tend to be broader than equivalent steel cylinders, so don’t always fit.
What we also are seeing now is refillable cylinders, that you can just refill at the LPG pump at a convenient gas station.

Between Canada and the Bahamas it's getting more difficult each year to get propane tanks filled as most are now tank exchange outlets ... drop off your empty pick up a filled one. One of the benefits of this is that the tanks are inspected and certification is kept up to date and many are freshly painted.

I've never worried about how much fuel was in the tanks because we carry two 20lb tanks each of which lasts around 3 months. When one tank runs out I have three months to get the other filled.

your on them wrong coast. we can get them filled at just about every gas station on the beach here .
