Innoculations for Caribbean ?

Are you going on vacation or setting off cruising? The answer might depend on how long your trip and in what area you might be exposed.

You should check with the Travel Medicine department of any large hospital.

When we prepared to set off, this was recommended to us:

Eastern Caribbean -- Typhoid, hepatitis, both A & B.

DR--yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A & B.

Western Caribbean -- yellow fever, typhoid, hep A & B.

You will also want to be up to date on Rabies and tetanus. If you are over the age of 50, you probably also want pneumonia vaccine. If aged 60 or over you really should have the shingles vaccine.

Get the yellow card -- International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by The World Health Organization. Have it updated with each vaccine you receive. Keep it with your passport. Nice to have everything all concisely recorded for medical reasons. Yes (before anyone asks), 2 countries we visited asked to see this card. But best reason to have it is for getting vaccine boosters in foreign countries when the time comes.

We called our local county health department - they have an International Travel department that advises on vaccines recommended depending on where you're traveling. We got all our vaccines there for MUCH less than it would have cost to get them at the doc's office.

Check to see if your state has County Health Departments, and ask about an international vaccination program. Was perfect for us!

good advise also avoid peeled fruit and peel any unpeeled fruit and veg. yourself...I am more worried about vaccines than I am about catching anything ...DVC

if they can't work it out for themselves exactly what they need ....
should they really be out there in the dangerous real world where you can get hepatitus or cholera or typhoid or gairdia from a simple tomato.

with dengue fever on the increase,surely yellow fever will follow.....

bats have all ways worried me living on a boat and are know to spread rabies......

Lots of helpful replies already but the answer is a function of the location FROM where you are entering. There is no generic answer to your question. The only authoritative answer you can expect is from the entry point authorities who will ask you your departure point and previous locations.

Im still worred,but I have been exposed to a little bit of everything and seem to never get sick ,could see where some would need such things ..i think anti-bacterial soap is like lightning rods on a house surrounded by tall trees...of coarse I dont want a doctor to operate on me without washing there hands with it,but every day is a little over the top....old lady down the road got a flu vaccine and it messed her up,she never had the flu and was the first time for the vaccine..that movie Contagin didnt put me at ease and I only saw the trailer...I bet in the end it was cured with a vaccine...DVC

Is there a vaccine for dengue?In Jamaica they have a soft drink called Ting Or Bitter Lemon that has quinine in it ,wonder if it is for prevention of malaria or taste..when I was a kid they gave out swine flu shots at school..even then i was leary of such things,kind of like beware of strangers bearin gifts...must be the indigenous nature coming out in me.. watch out for them killer tomatos...DVC
