HOW DO YOU NOT SLIDE AROUND ON THE CABIN FLOOR?

I'm willing to admit this is a silly question (maybe), but as we sail further and further afield, I've run into sliding around on our varnished floor in the cabin. Only, of course when the waves get high. I've thought about putting down antiskid tape at regular intervals, but that's pretty hard on the bare feet (also I don't want it there when we anchor or are in harbor.

So what do the rest of you do?

Some boats , and especially Beneteaus often have overly polished sole boards. IN the past Ive used different mat varnishes and tape and other combinations. It often improves with age.

No really solution , develop better monkey abilities

Not all.... But on one one boat I used a carpet runner.... Not for everybody....

Cheap... Quick to deploy AND ... Takes no time or space removed... Saves some wear and tear on the sole finish in the traffic pattern.... coordinate with interior.... change it up in 2 years for a new look....

while holding onto a grab rail I wonder how you would do it on a big new beneteau......

seriously, I've looked at the new sense series at the boat show, and I don't see how you'd move from the companionway to the salon without being on all foursw in a seaway.But they sure are roomy compared to a 37 year old 32'er.

We have a natural teak cabin sole. Very non skid and easy to maintain.

Steve Dashew had a good idea that we copied. Every second strip of teak was a mix of varnish and ground up walnut shells. Apply the varnish, sprinkle in the walnut shells. After its dry remove the tapes and apply a couple of final coats, gives you excellent non skid and looks great to boot.

Our solution too, can withstand 40kgs of dog as he launches himself down the companion way steps. Rubber backed so both grips and doesn't mark the teak and holly sole, they go in the dustbin twice a year for a good clean or get the hose pipe on the deck if we are away. This sort of thing:

Had a big dog too.... Of course.... Protects the sole from winch handle impacts in the 1% chance it is dropped over the rug.... (my crew needs better aim...)

I sanded my super shiny varnish with 800 grit (lightly). It looks like semi-gloss now and it's a lot less slippery when it's wet.

i do not varnish nor do i tolerate varnish on my walking surfaces. i am sola,and i refuse to allow a stoopit thing to kill me. btdt with slick flooring already and lost some mobility as i broke my back.

I second the monkey grip thing. Sometimes it just doesnt matter what kind of sole there is. My galley is way rough sole being nonskid and recently I skated across it and rammed my toes into a bulkhead. at the same time I watched a bottle of hot sauce rise up out of the fiddles and come at me like a guided missile. We were sailing beam to and occasionally a wave would break on the side of the boat causing violent motion.

This is what we do. Carpet runners atop non-slip grippers. Never a problem in a seaway.

International does an anti-slip powder.. just mix it in the varnish/epoxy and apply to the areas of main use... barely noticeable from the untreated..
