Foul Weather Gear: Your Thoughts and Opinions ?

if any one has any thoughts on what you think is the best gear, I am all ears.

Please give me your thoughts opinions for good or for bad.

Anything made of Gore-tex on the outside.

Fleece mid-layer.

Wicking (e.g. Helly Hansen Lifa) under.

Windstopper, if it is dry but windy.

Down, if it is freezing.

I bet the Gore sailing boots are great too.

We had Henry Loyd weather gear">foul weather gear with integral harnesses for our tradewind voyage around the world. It was expensive but very good. We never used it at sea. Once my son and I put it on to make a trip in the rain to MacDonalds in Whangarei, New Zealand. We were the best dressed people as we ate our burgers in foul weather gear.

I thought we would use it alot, but our catamaran is so dry, and the autopilot so effective that we did not find it necessary to steer the boat in inclement weather. We spent our time dry under the bimini. Since we were in a tradewind circumnavigation and the weather was warm, we didn't mind occasionally getting wet when reefing a sail.

I think the situation would have been different if we did high latitude sailing in bad weather.

I guess that's one reason why I love trade wind warm weather sailing so much.

Pants should have re-enforced knees and butt and go really high with suspenders. You'll wear the pants and boots all the time; the jacket you can take on and off but especially the pants have a funny way of staying on all day.

Don't wear the boots off the boat. My friends have a pair just for the dinghy which seems absurd at first but makes a lot of sense so your boat pair doesn't get chewed up.

Have a place in the boat to store wet gear. The shower works since it has a drain and hopefully a lot of ventilation.

I second the GoreTex comment. Have some cheapo PVC gear onboard for guests who don't bring anything. Takes up very little space and costs $20.

Snowboard / ski goggles work good for really nasty weather so you can see.

Weird glitch in the matrix. Googling sud-west hats, first ref was to this thread, in which the op had an entirely other handle, perhaps a past incarnation dredged up by the matrix fairies.

also add sweats to the dont wear list-all they do , even under good foulies is make rivers down the arms and legs. i prefer to sail nekkid than have that feeling--good thing i sail mostly in warm waters.....

I just renewed my foul weather gear. Most of the big names come out at some serious money - I went for Gill in the end and am very happy with it (and the price).

Hopefully Gill still has a lifetime guarantee. We went with Gill in 2004, and a few years ago the large white stripes were flaking off the jackets. Took them to West Marine, thankfully had saved the tags and receipts, and exchanged them for new at no cost to us.

Musto. Got their heavy-duty set with built-in harness eighteen years ago, you could sail up to arctic pack ice with it, and it is still going. It is too much for the tropics so I augmented it with their wind-shell, lighter set, usually only wearing the jacket when I have to go forward in seas to keep the seawater off. Rain in the tropics is usually warm...

Ladies and Guys: can we possibly post which Musto, which HH, etc - I mean I do not think Musto or HH make good or bad stuff - the point is they often make both wonderful and horrible (e.g. Henri Lloyd or Burke) stuff.

PLS at least try to refer to which model or fabric they are.

I think this makes sense.

Musto HPX Ocean jacket and ocean trousers for heavy duty stuff. MPX Coastal jacket and trousers for tropics except the trousers get very little use...

King of Mongo, Mongo Bong:

Sudwester (by Jeantex) - gut, Burke (bibs) - very bad (delaminated 3 weeks into the trip).

Mongo, the king - about average, but made it fine ;-)
