That's what I was thinking; the oldest flares may be more of a safety hazard than pirates.

Better idea: let's combine this thread with the Drones for Cruisers thread. The fellows on that thread can become Team "A", and they'll fly the drones. The follows on this thread can become Team "B", and we'll shoot them down with our flares.

How cool is that?

Allow me to point out that Capngoe is one of the site moderators. He may have been giving a subtle warning that the thread was getting out of hand.

Would you be happier if he just shut it down?

Anchors on catamarans would be ideal.

Re: Flares as a weapon

How about a thread on using your anchor for impromptu body armor while shooting flares at pirates on multihulls? I'm going with the Delta, those broad flukes provide more cover....

I dunno, the Manson's roll bar works like a necklace and still has pretty big flukes and you can clip your flare gun into the ring and still be able to move and aim it without the risk of dropping it overboard. The only problem is that when shooting catamarans it can be difficult to choose an ama.

Re: Flares as a weapon

what might be more effective if if you find yourself with a surplus of 25 mm rockets is to fire them simultaniously, constrcting something like a "stalins organ".

firing out of tubes will ensure better accuracy as well.

I think Customs may have a problem with your Katyusha. Maybe you can tell them it's for hunting?

Re: Flares as a weapon

Bash, you keep your crappy misfiring flares off my drones. They have the height advantage and I'm still working on a solution for dumping Nature's Head by-product without leaving the boat...

Flares by themselves....bad choice for a weapon. They do however have other useful effects. Sudden ultrabright illumination at night = goodbye night vision. There are ways and means of screwing with people's plans for your demise, not necessarily involving hosing them with lead, though it was once the best way of convincing someone to leave you alone.

If only there were more mature folk that could confine themselves to either contributing to the various defence threads, perhaps resulting in helping cruisers stay safe without expending the dreaded nitrocellulose, or mtob. Otherwise lots of ingenious solutions never get around, and the problem is swept into the head-in-sand tray. Maybe there should be a counterweight thread for debating the best ways of doing nothing and hoping for the best? Preserve the status quo, conform, consume, coddle, consensus, cuddle. And cull the rest...

Re: Flares as a weapon

Surprised no one has suggested a shotgun insert. If you are willing to risk having shells found on your boat, it could be a useful weapon. Don't have it myself.

Yeah I'm with you unfortunately I only have 6 X 25mm paracute flares plus another 3 recently expired ones (ugh if only I hadent wasted letting off that one on bonfire night I'd have another in my amory) that would have made 10,But thinking proactively there are probably another two in the liferaft grabbag.
