I am the last person to try and scare you, but IF disaster strikes 50 miles from shore is a very, very long way. Wasn't there a recent story about some guys on a short trip rescued in the Gulf of Mexico because they had an EPIRB?
Dingy in the davits in the Carribean 3 years. Annapolis to Trinidad. Up and down twice throughout. No issues. Round the world...? At this point I would probably do it also... on a fairly large boat... and be willing to cut it loose if the improbable "perfect storm" occurred....
