Fibreglass propane tanks

Sorry if this isn't in the proper forum....

Recently viewed a sailboat with two fibreglass propane tanks set up for the barbeque and oven/stove.

My broker suggested that fibreglass propane tanks had been banned in the U.S......does anyone have any further info on this or any suggestions where I could research this subject on the internet?

It's not true. Trident still sells well made fiberglass tanks. There was a recall for all fiberglass tanks made my Lite.

There is no ban. Tanks made by lite were recalled but the trident/ragasco tanks are good. I have a pair of the latter and get them filled all the time

It is illegal for them to be filled in Louisiana DOT regulation. I ordered one from West Marine in 2009 when I went to get it filled the retailer said he couldn't do it I didn't believe him and he got the DOT guy on the phone for me their office confirmed and asked me where I bought it. When I went to return it the crew at W.M. told me a DOT guy had stopped by to warn them. Maybe the reulations have changed since then. The DOT guy told me there had been cases of the seams on some of the composite tanks slpitting? West Marine took the tank back with no problems.

I use an 11 pound Ragasco made tank from Lehr with my propane outboard. It's a lot easier to handle on a boat than a metal tank. I think it's less likely to chip gel coat.
I've never had a problem getting it filled. Of course it will fuel my little 2.5 for about fifteen hours the way I use it, so I don't refill it often.

Only one manufacturer had problems with tanks splitting.
What Louisiana is doing is akin to saying since one line of cars has defects all cars are defective.
Not as defective as their logic however.

I also use a Ragasco 11 pound tank. No problem getting it refilled and lighter than the metal tanks I use to use.

Advance apology for mild thread rift ...
Does anyone make a fiberglass tank that is 11" or less in diameter ? The 12" tanks do not fit into the propane well on my 2005 Catalina 36 MkII. <Grrrrr>

JD1, Right now only Ragasco is making fiberglass LPG tanks. They are all 12" in diameter. It sounds like your well was designed to hold 10 pound aluminum tanks that are 10-1/2" OD.

Yes, it is made for a 10 lb tank, either steel or aluminum and won't fit the 12" fiberglass tanks.
The insert in the locker that has the well for the tank goes right to the edge of the locker so I can't even change out the insert for one that is slightly larger
