Idiots!

New to them boat, head out on a long first trip, know there is a TS/hurricane coming, know they are going to take same path, try to outrun it, know they couldn't and still didn't head in when they could have.

All because of a schedule.

Some might say they did not deserve to be rescued

To paraphrase a saying: A fool and their boat are soon parted.

The broker told them the boat was "capable".

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

I am confused.

Who said they were “on a schedule”? Who said they were “trying to outrun it”? Who said the boat was new to them? Who said the broker talked them into the boat?

It’s easy to mock them, but without any details, it is empty mocking.

For example. I say “They left Key West 7 days before the storm, the engine blew apart 22 hours out, and they had absolutely no wind for the 6 days before the storm suddenly hit them”.

Is that correct? Prove it wrong….who knows?

They got blindsided by a hurricane.

OK maybe they were just too stupid to not check the weather!

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

It looked to me that aside from sail damage the boat was doing fine. I suspect the crew was what failed. The boat will probably turn up somewhere just fine. What competent sailor gets blindsided from a hurricane these days? Kmacdonald, should the period at the end of your statement have been a question mark?

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

Well, they shouldn't have been out there, but at least they somehow kept the boat afloat in the reported 20' seas and 60 knot winds.

Maybe folks should be happy they are alive rather than the constant put down.

Others here have lost their boats as well.

This guy didn’t sound so knowledgeable to me…

Plus he says he sank the boat intentionally! Oh my…

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

Really bad decisions. We all are going to need to hang it up at some point. He put other people’s lives in danger. Once you cross that line you shouldn’t go back.
