Crime statistics

I hope this is in the right area, if not could an admin please move it to the right forum.

I've noticed a lot of talk about pirate attacks and attacks on sailors. What's unclear from all of these incidents is the variables that would allow a particular yacht to make informed decisions.

I think if there's anything almost all of the members here will agree on is that no 2 boats are the same. This lead me to think that there might be something in the types of yachts that are targeted.

Are bigger yachts more likely to be a target? What about older vs newer?

My logic is that if a pirate spots us sailing along on Taleisin they would think "Those people can't even afford a new or bigger boat, can't be much worth our time on there". I realise that this might be flawed thinking, but is there any where to collect data on this and put some statistics together.

This information might not be useful but I think it would be interesting at least to people other than myself.

Any thoughts?

Re: Crime statistics

It would also be interesting to see some actual statistics over time. I suspect no such data exists, or even could exist. But I wonder how much of the "it's way worse than it used to be" is caused by the much more connected world, so that every little incident is now reported and discussed.

Overall, the world is getting measurably safer, so it would be a bit strange to have one category, "crimes against cruisers", on the rise.

Re: Crime statistics

Noonsite probably has the best list of individual attacks available:

General Piracy

I doubt there's any compiled list of statistics because like many things on the high seas, it's no one government's responsibility and the areas where it happens are by definition not well governed anyway.

Re: Crime statistics

IMB reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur has tracked global piracy since the early 90's, I've never been able to post a link on this forum with my android, but it should be very easy to Google. Excellent web site.
